WSJ also quotes Iranian official as saying Khamenei yet to decide on plans, fearing Israel will intercept missiles and respond with major strike on Iran's strategic infrastructure

Let's hope not. The world has felt like it's inching in the direction of catastrophe for years now.

Israel and Ukraine are fighting the same enemy.

Russian, Iran, and others are at war with the West only most of us are not fighting back.

Yes, but let's all hope the Iranians don't feel sufficiently emboldened to take it to the next level.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP12 Apr 2024 7:06 p.m. PST

We all hope this does not happen. But IF Iran tries to strike Israel, I have faith in the IDF & IAF could intercept, etc. whatever weapons Iran may be using. I.e. Drones, missiles or aircraft.

Nine pound round12 Apr 2024 7:23 p.m. PST

I certainly hope so. Ultimately, the only way you stop that kind of stuff is to retaliate so strongly that your opponent quits attacking, out of fear the next strike will be even worse. For the Iranians, that's probably a matter of knowing how to hit a comparatively small number of targets very, very hard.

Personally, I am all in favor of a punitive model for dealing with barbaric countries, I think you can easily overcomplicate things.

The fact they are carefully thinking of a suitable target and the consequences speaks volumes about how concerned they are are. Have to be seen to do something or they lose face. But no doubt fully aware of how much they will cop it in the shorts in response.

Apparently 'Israeli-linked' is a somewhat tenuous statement by all accounts.

Some good comments …

I really think Iran knows if they try to attack Israel and/or US assets in the region, or even elsewhere. The US leadership does not have the brass ⚾⚽ to retaliate with the kind of force that it would take to cripple their military.

But what if they are wrong ?

It is an election year; they know that too.

Do they want to risk it ?

On CNN today, a USAF GEN Ret. said this would be a good time to hit Iran's nuclear locations. IMO that might be a real good idea.

Legion, must be somewhat serious. It got the POTUS to leave his normal and routine Delaware weekend and come back to Washington.

If nothing more than Cruise missiles and drones, and light or no casualties. I doubt much happens other than Iran gets to brag to their people that they struck Israel in retaliation.

Of course Israel can always use it to up the anti and use it as an excuse to take out Iran's Nuke sites.

On the Arab news just now, they are saying US is knocking out some of Irans incoming drones and cruise missiles.

Well Iran says: "That's it". So for them a face saving effort. Let's see if Israel agrees.

Yep, the Bleeped text has hit the fan … will the US do anything effective to hurt Iran ? My $ says no. Now the Israelis on the other hand their air force will do some real damage to Iran. it's payback time …

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP14 Apr 2024 5:17 a.m. PST

Legion, actually it will be interesting how this plays out. Obviously Iran was face saving. They even warned all involved. No casualties to my knowledge. So how Israel handles this will be interesting. The administration is telling them not to respond. Of course the POTUS told Iran "DON'T", that obviously didn't work.

This could signify that Israel isn't planning anything in the near future.

Strangely ineffective; the Iranians are more successful at mass killing when they use guys with Kalashnikovs to attack unarmed civilians than when they try high tech weaponry. Did they expect this? Was this meant to turn out as it did, as a way to deescalate the crisis, while appearing to retaliate- perhaps for domestic consumption?

Oh yes, I think we all feel that way … but how many US and Allied forces will have to die … again ? Because of some poor decisions from the top US leadership.

All very true … I think Iran's leaders will paint this as a great "victory" … Their people don't really have much freedom when it comes to a free press. Or much of anything else really.

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP14 Apr 2024 9:03 a.m. PST

Face saving, yes. That is why Iran telegraphed it days ahead. Just to tell their people: "We did something". According to the news, Biden has now told Israel "DON'T". We will see if they listen better than Iran. 😉

Anyway Israel just hit Hezbollah hard.

I still think Israel will hold the retaliation card in their pocket and use it at their own convenience. Just my opinion.

The Arab-Persian divide gets less attention than the Sunni-Shia divide, but it's almost as important a contributor to the otherwise hard-to-explain network of odd pairings and strange bedfellows that make up Middle Eastern politics.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP14 Apr 2024 4:32 p.m. PST

Well that is a good point. The Arabs and Persians are not really BFFs. Even with both being moslem, the Sunni and Shia have little love for each other. IIRC the Sunni make up 80% of islam and Iran about 20%.
