You were asked – TMP link If you have a special chapeau you like to adorn yourself with for gaming, what is it? 5% said "Baseball cap with military theme" 5% said "Forage Cap" 4% said "Beret (black)" 3% [TIE] said "Baseball cap with game logo/theme" OR "Boonie" OR "Fedora" OR "Fez" |
Col Durnford | 08 Apr 2024 7:22 a.m. PST |
Keep in mind 23% said "No". If you add in the other negatives it goes up to 37% don't wear hats at games. |
Parzival | 08 Apr 2024 7:51 a.m. PST |
Which conversely means that 73% do wear hats at games, but the choice of chapeau is widely dispersed among the list provided (which was a very long list). I could have selected far more than 5 entries. |

Now I made my Napoleonic shakos its a given. And in 43 years I have never commanded a Frenchman |
Dagwood | 08 Apr 2024 9:38 a.m. PST |
Or 73% SOMETIMES wear hats at games. |
Col Durnford | 08 Apr 2024 11:15 a.m. PST |
I believe that should be 63% wear some type of hats. |

Back in Coach Stallings last year as Alabama's head football coach, I attended a conference for high school coaches. He yelled at me for not taking my cap off while inside the Colosseum. So I have never worn a cap or hat inside this that time. Lol. |
Parzival | 08 Apr 2024 3:54 p.m. PST |
Mia culpa! Yes, bad math— 63% wear hats! |

I recall that Bear Bryant famously wouldn't wear a hat in the Superdome when Bama was in the Sugar Bowl, because it was "indoors." Odd thing is, the real reason men take off their hats indoors wasn't to be polite— it was because inside you don't need the hat to protect you from the elements. And back in those days, people had hat stands and hat hooks (or in fancy places, hat check girls) where men could place leave their hats. These days such things are rare. If there's no place to hang my hat, it stays on my head; t'isn't me being rude. |

My office can get cold enough that we need protection from the elements. I leave a watch cap in my bag for those summer days that are 85F outside and feel like 40F inside. |

As said above, this No hats indoors is relatively new, at least since the 50s ended link |

Are you saying that not wearing a hat indoors coincides with the decline of men wearing hats? |
robert piepenbrink | 09 Apr 2024 4:07 p.m. PST |
Actually, I suspect it's much lower than 63%. Parzival, your comment suggests that you picked your top five. If that was typical, then there were 20 some hat people--outvoted 2:1 by "none of these/no opinion" and a poll on "what type of hat?" is much more likely to get a response from the sort of person who does. Note that no hat got more than 12 votes, and take a look at convention photos. If anyone really cares, run a poll asking "do you wear a gaming hat while gaming indoors?" |
Parzival | 09 Apr 2024 8:00 p.m. PST |
Of course, how many voted both that they didn't wear a hat AND "This is ridiculous" AND "Not my cuppa." Or, for that matter, those who do wear hats but also included "This is ridiculous" as an answer. And we don't know how many own less than 5 hats (which conversely drives the total number of hat wearers up, while lowering the overall number of hats selected compared to poll participants. All TMP polls these days are near about useless as far as statistical measurements of anything go. There are too many possible answers which all mean the same things, and in some cases too few options, or in others too many. So no one can claim much of anything about the polls. |
robert piepenbrink | 10 Apr 2024 4:10 a.m. PST |
But you couldn't vote "I don't wear a hat" Parzival. Not one of the options. That's why I settled on "none of these" as the single largest negative vote. Fully agree with your last paragraph, but yesterday, you thought it was evidence of a vast silly hat-wearing majority I somehow never saw at conventions. Which is why I couldn't take the "doesn't own five hats" idea seriously. People who wear one silly hat will wear any of them. |
Parzival | 11 Apr 2024 8:53 p.m. PST |
I wasn't quoting the poll selections. "None of the above" can mean "I don't wear a hat" or it could mean "I don't wear a hat from the final round list." And I dispute that all hats are silly, or that one who has a silly hat will always have more than one, or even 5. The poll certainly can't be interpreted as definitive on any of those questions. And, no, I didn't think it was a majority of convention goers— I said nothing of the sort. I thought the poll reflected solely what the poll covers: people who are members of TMP who will participate in a poll about hats. Which is a very small community of respondents. |

Just a off handed guess at a convention maybe 1 or 2 in a hundred wear a gameing hat. If I didn't think it was neat I wouldn't have joined in. |

Over the years it is hard to forget the trend of various groups having players wearing hats representing various factions in the game. African head dresses, Turkish fezzes, British piths, etc. |
