I started playing 40K back in the Rogue Trader days, but I have not played for quite a while. In recent years I've joined a great D&D group and I often provide terrain and miniatures for the group's use. A few weeks back one of the DMs was running a weird sort of dream sequence and asked me if I had any Science Fictiony figures he could use for one of the sequences. I said sure and brought some of my 40K Space Marines to the game, where they worked fine. But the players were amazed and fascinated with the figures. Before I knew it I was running a demo game for them and now two of them are planning to buy their own armies! Looks like I'm back into 40K!

buy their own armies!

You can use years of experience to advise them NOT to design a full 2,000 point army and buy it all at once.

Nothing stops more people in the hobby than a pile of shame, then an army of gray, and then the prospect of months of painting

Introduce them to Grimdark Future. The entry price is WAY better than 40k…

And it's lots of fun….

@ Louis XIV, Do 40k gamers paint anymore? Not in the Toledo area… walk into the Local Game store and you'll see 3-4 games of GW products…not a drop of paint on any of them…. Pretty typical here….

Do 40k gamers paint anymore?

I would say it's about 50% here. Stores could help by enforcing a "battle ready" policy. Then again the store wants to sell stuff and the unpainted folks must have ADHD. First week it's Necrons, then Nids, maybe Marines in week 3.

It's not even meta chasing. More like buying whole armies until they find one they like.

Recommend 40K Kill Team.

Well, one of the guys, with more money than time, managed to buy enough units for a fully painted 1500 Space Marine army off of Ebay. Two more guys have bought maybe 500 points of figs and I'm teaching them how to paint them. And one more person is getting into it but is using proxy figures from another company.
