Trying to remember the big tribes that were the bulk of the old 2nd edition 40k games.

I have got to the point where I have amassed enough armed goblins or gretchin for sci-fi, that it might be worthwhile breaking them into lesser armies based on theOrk tribes?

Goffs-shooty types, everything guns

Evil Sunz-something to do with mechanized and speed

Freebooters-pirate themed

Stormtroopers-German helmets and potato masher grenades, I think they got pulled pretty quick after some bad publicity.

Wasn't there a feral tribe?

Any other major tribes I missed and their peculiarities?

Clans, that's the word they used.

Bad Moons – richest of Orkz, lots of battlewagons and fancy weapons

Snakebites – shun technology, ride war boars and cover themselves in battle paint; this I think is the feral lot you are thinking of

Blood Axes – use looted human technology and vehicles, can work as mercenaries for da Humies

Kult of Speed – lots of bikes, scrapjets, truks

Hope this is helpful!

I believe the Blood Axes were the guys who looked like storm troopers. They like camouflage. They are the "least ork" of the Orks.

The Snake Bites were the feral "wild" orcs.

Goff had that red/black/checkerboard motif and bull horn symbols. They preferred hand to hand combat and often were depicted with a bolter and an axe.

Deathskulls were scavengers and thieves and wore blue. Their clan is related to the Blood Axes.

Bad Moonz are the weathiest and best equipped, wear yellow and black.

Evil Sunz were typically adorned in red and liked loud engines and speed. Many Evil Suns belong to the Kult of Speed but I don't believe it's a prerequisite.

Yep, the two above have all of the main Ork Klanz. Here are some additional notes I would add

Goff – black / checks, bull horns, have more Nobz and Skarboyz (tougher / experienced Orks)

Bad Moons – The richest Orks (because their teef grow faster). Like Yellow, moons, have more Weirdboyz (psykers)

Blood Axes – like camouflage, tactics, will trade with and work with Humans, have Kommandos (sneaky Orks)

Snakebites – Feral, animal skins, snake totems. Boar Riders.

Deathskulls – blue face paint, like to loot from the battlefield. Loota's have bashed together weapons from bits scavenged from the battlefield.

Evil Sunz – White / red, sun motif. Lots of Vehicles.

--
Freebootaz – Pirates / ork mercenaries. Outcasts from their Klan, they have often colorful clothes with stripes / etc. Will hire themselves out to any warboss who can pay them.

Kult of Speed – these are orks who are addicted to speed (often Evil Sunz) and ride bikes or in wagons.

Stormboyz – these are rebellious young Ork boyz who like marching and discipline. They did originally have the German Stormtrooper style. They also had the option to take jump packs. (Currently they look the same as others, but always have the jump packs. They also the rebellious marching and discipline part is removed now too).

I would like to one day have an army for each Klan made following the Rogue Trader era 'Ere We Go and Dakka Dakka Dakka rulebooks. And one of each of the Options from Freebootaz book. (Possessed Ork Weirdboy, Khorne's Stormboyz, Ork Genestealer hybrids, mad Mek and Dok with their army of dreadnoughts, and more)

And don't forget that RED vehicles go faster!

Thanks everyone!

Crazy part is back when GW was ditching their 2nd edition, I picked up a bunch of box sets for next to nothing, because as a joke I was making a Gretchin based army.

since then I have amassed dedicated space goblins, GW, Grendier, Shockforce et ceteera,,,. I have also converted a couple acres more of the fantasy one. My guess is near three thousand total.

I think I can actually get away with Gretchin clan based armies at this point.

I think that a number of new comapnies have rekindled my spirit in them, like the space goblins by Renegade and Knightmare, not to mention all the other traditional fantasy ranges that have sprung up. 3D printing is just begging me to get back in.

Sankebites, that's it! The semi-feral types.

Bad Moons, the teeth growing clan with all the fancy gear.

Stormboys, did they belong to the Blood Axe or were they independant?

I found 3D prints of goblins in greatcoats, German helmets and autoguns and my eye started to twitch uncontrollably.

I also found 3D prints of the traditinal gretchin with autogun in spiky helmet like the old hard plastic model from the game box. They give the exact same look and feel while giving a variety of poses,,,

,,, resistance is futile,,,

Stormboyz were available for all of the clans. It was a phase for the rebellious youths that Orks went through.

From Ere We Go: (Rogue Trader Ork book):
Stormboyz are rebellious young Orks who drill regularly, march in step, selute the Boss Orks and even polish their jackboots. Such Human-style behaviour is frowned upon by traditionallly-minded Orks. Nevertheless, Stormboyz take war very seriously indeed and are grudgingly acknowledged as amongst the hardest of all the Boyz. Stormboyz all live together in Barraks next to the Warboss's stronghold. Because they are disciplined and efficient they choose to call themselves a Korps rather than a Mob.

Second Edition they were pretty similar. I think the only models I remember were the Jump pack version.

Third edition they were no longer disciplined, they were just some orks that were crazy enough to strap on an Ork rokkit pack.
"Stormboyz are fierce Ork warriors who are willing to gamble with their lives (and their sanity) by strapping on crude Ork rokkit packs to bast them towards the enemy."

I really like the goofy 2nd edition gretchin monopose plastic models (except for only having a single pose!). It would be great to have a variety of poses in that same style.
