"Canning most foods is nothing new to most preppers. Yet, only a few of you know that you can also can your bread.

You heard that right. Bread can too be canned and preserved for two to five years. Some even claim that period can be extended up to ten years.

Imagine having such a staple food always ready whenever you need it. You can have it with any meal a day, accompanied by whatever you like…"

Apparently, because this is the first I'm hearing of this B&M Brown Bread. So, thanks for the link.

When I was a boy – back in the '50's – 'twas a canned Crosse & Blackwell Date & Nut Bread. Very good with cream cheese, or butter. Does not seem to be available in the US these days, darn. Would be nice to have for my bedtime snack tonight…

Canned brown bread – sometimes known as Boston Bread – is available at Walmart and other supermarkets.

It apparently dates back to WWI, when sugar was rationed, and molasses was substituted. Modern versions are often sweeter than the original, which was more of a rye bread.

C rations used to have crackers and pound cake and they were both canned and good. Pound cake was so good you could trade cigarettes for it. Cigarettes in the little four pack were like gold.

C rats also had canned white bread: you could punch some holes in it, add a little water to steam (still in the can), put in peanut butter or jelly (if you had them), and it was not only edible, but almost pleasant. Eating the bread straight out of the can, unheated, was a really unpleasant chore: not as bad as Ham and limas, but close.

… have my mother-in-law make it? Even mold can't penetrate the outer layer of what she cooks!

I have a (faint) recollection that Tamiya (yes, that Tamiya) marketed similar emergency foods for the Japanese market.

Brown bread is easy to make (I've done it several times), but I do prefer the canned ones (though they are bit expensive… ;-)

Thanks also…
