I use YOUTUBE to watch a lot of wargaming related content and yesterday after watching a video I saw one on the suggestions at the right, from a movie reviewer that I watch, that said words to the effect in the title of "goodbye and farewell". Well, I thought that maybe he was packing it in and no longer going to make videos and this was his saying goodbye. I've seen other farewell vids like that in the past.

But when I clicked on it I was IMMEDIATELY disconnected from the internet and every time I reconnected and tried to access YT the same thing happened. I can access anything else on the net, so far, like normal, but YT seems lost to me.

I restarted my computer and scanned it multiple times with my antivirus software but it shows nothing out of the ordinary. It would seem like that movie review link was just some kind of virus or other nefarious thing designed to make people's lives miserable. Oh, I check my laptop and am still able to access YT on it, so this seems confined to my desktop computer, which is my main go-to for online activities.

So has anyone else experienced this or heard of it and does anyone know how to counteract it? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Try clearing your cache and deleting your history.

Good luck.

Unless you or someone else is playing an April Fool's joke on you and me.

Wolf,

Never thought of that. If that's the case I hope it ends at the end of the day. And I did those things you mentioned. No Go.

Stryderg01 Apr 2024 7:01 p.m. PST

You may not be logged in to google (they own youtube).
Go to google.com
Look in the upper right corner for a circle with a letter in it.
Click that circle
It should show your gmail address and have a "manage accounts" button.
If it doesn't, then sign in, then try youtube.

Stryderg01 Apr 2024 7:06 p.m. PST

Another thought: you may have hit a malicious site that messed with your DNS. (I'm assuming that you are using a Windows machine.)
Click the start button and type 'cmd' then hit enter.
That will bring up a command prompt (black box with white text).
Type "nslookup youtube.com" and hit enter
You should get the following:
Server: <<<your dns server, probably your router>>>
Address: <<<192.168.1.1 or something similar>>>

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: YouTube link
Addresses: 2607:f8b0:4023:1009::5b
2607:f8b0:4023:1009::be
2607:f8b0:4023:1009::88
2607:f8b0:4023:1009::5d
142.251.116.136
142.251.116.190
142.251.116.93
142.251.116.91

Let me know what you get in the first 2 entries (what I put in <<< >>>.

If yu refer to a certain movie critic from Scotland – it was an April Fools joke.
That being said, I was able to watch it wothout a problem.

If it was an April Fool's joke, that man should be given a coat of tar and feathers and driven out of town on a rail!

Korvessa01 Apr 2024 10:14 p.m. PST

The video itself was the joke – which he made clear at the end.
But like I said, I watched it without a problem – that other stufff about being booted off never happened to me. I seriously doubt the author of the video did that. He is far too sucessful to do something like that (he has almost 2 million subscribers)

Blackhorse MP02 Apr 2024 4:11 a.m. PST

Stryderg,

I signed in to Google and as soon as I tried YOUTUBE I was immediately knocked offline. And yes I'm running Windows…still 7. Wonder if that's part of the problem.

For your second suggestion, the first 2 lines are:
Server: unknown
Address: 2001:558:feed::1

Korvessa, yes the critic was from Scotland, can be critical, and likes to drink. And I agree he probably didn't have anything to do with my problem.

That's a ComCast router, I think (IPv6?). I suspect they have a problem – you might want to check with ComCast's technical support.

sillypoint02 Apr 2024 12:40 p.m. PST

I'm impressed.
Not only miniatures, but also tech support.
Love you guys, got each others back.

Stryderg02 Apr 2024 1:16 p.m. PST

Server: unknown
That's your problem, no DNS server. Some possibilities: 1) Comcast isn't pushing that info to your router, so your router can't push it to your computer. 2) highly unlikely, but you hit a malicious site that wiped that info from your computer, or your router's been hijacked. 3) Windows just decided that you needed more adventure in your life.

Try turning off the computer, then turning off the router. Turn on the router, wait 5 minutes, turn on the computer.

Blackhorse MP02 Apr 2024 2:25 p.m. PST

Stryderg, the unplugging didn't help. Still get immediately disconnected when attempting YT. However, when I checked the black box I got a different result:

Server: cdns01.comcast.net
Address 2001:558:feed::1

So at least it recognizes the server now. And it also added:

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: YouTube link
Addresses: 2607:f8b0:4009:81c::200e
142.250.190.110

I'm just offering moral support and encouragement. If I were physically present, that would take the form of a nice bottle of California merlot.

Good luck and best wishes!

If its only affecting the one computer, I wonder if something has been injected into your 'hosts' file that is blocking your access?

If you are on windows, try :

1. open notepad
2. select file | open
3. type in
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Everything in my hosts file starts with a '#' or has nothing on that line.

Blackhorse MP03 Apr 2024 4:19 a.m. PST

djb,

This is what comes up. Doesn't look like anything useful to me. How about you?

That's normal. The # denotes a comment, so you don't have any actual entries in there.

Any way you can post a video of what's happening?

Blackhorse MP03 Apr 2024 11:00 a.m. PST

Not able to post a video unfortunately. But there's not much to see really. Just every time I time try to open a YT page I get disconnected from the internet instantly. It's not even like the page even opens for a split second then disconnects, it disconnects before the page even becomes visible. Very strange and something I've never encountered before.

The fact that I can still access YT on my laptop seems to suggest that the problem is in my desktop computer. And I know, the obvious answer is to just use my laptop, which I will, but this is a problem that is going to need solving.

Stryderg03 Apr 2024 3:53 p.m. PST

Are you using Chrome or Edge? Use the other one, or install Firefox and use that. Does the problem show up in a different browser? If not, then it's a browser problem. If it does, then it's something Windows or network card related.

At this point, its going to be: just try stuff to try and narrow down the problem.

Wolfhag03 Apr 2024 5:49 p.m. PST

Did this start happening after you did an update or installed new software?

Is your BIOS updated? Do you have the latest router and other drivers?

Right click on the link and open it in a new window

Stryderg,

Hadn't thought about the browser, so I downloaded Edge and sure enough, no problem getting on YT. So I imagine the problem resides in the Brave browser I'm using, as I can get YT on my laptop which is still sputtering along with the ancient Windows 7 which I have been too lazy to replace.

Well, I guess it's time to update and modernize my home systems. I'll post something when I get things straightened out.

Thanks SO MUCH for the assistance everyone! thumbs up

Blackhorse MP04 Apr 2024 4:39 a.m. PST

Wolfhag,

Sorry, I responded to Stryderg before seeing your last post. I'm just going to update my Windows and either re-download Brave or maybe try another browser. Hopefully that should do the trick. If not, I'll get back to you. grin

Stryderg04 Apr 2024 3:24 p.m. PST

Cool. Once you get this mess sorted, stop messing around with your computer and play some games!!! :)

Blackhorse MP04 Apr 2024 5:47 p.m. PST

Aye, Aye Cap'n!

Andy ONeill06 Apr 2024 8:34 a.m. PST

That must be a pretty old pc.

Blackhorse MP08 Apr 2024 4:26 a.m. PST

If you consider a computer from 2012 old then yes, it is.

Interesting update: I went ahead and ordered a new desktop computer(hasn't arrived yet), but a couple of days ago my current one decided to let me access YT again, and is running normally(for it) again. Maybe it sees the writing on the wall, doesn't want to get put out to pasture and is trying to get back into my good graces before it's replacement arrives. Unfortunately it's living on borrowed time.

Andy ONeill08 Apr 2024 11:51 a.m. PST

I would say a 12 yo pc is living on borrowed time. Make sure anything you need is backed up.

A funny thing about pc's, you feel like the one that you have is something that you bought about a year ago when the reality is that it is an antique. I guess as long as it keeps working ok….

Andy ONeill03 May 2024 10:22 a.m. PST

So long as things work and you're not running a substantial risk then there's no real downside.
Always back up anything you wouldn't like to lose.
Pictures are often disk hogs. Copy them to Imgur or something and an external drive.
