I know that 'ordinary' Fallschirmjager would undertake recce tasks, but were there specific units within the regiments that carried out these tasks at a greater depth? If so, does anyone know how they were organised and if they were motorised? I am keen to know if this applied specifically in western Europe 1944-45. |

The OB I have lists a Divisional motorized recon company and a recon platoon at the regimental level who might have motorcycles if they are lucky. |

There is a Gliederung at Sturmpanzer.com for the 1944 incarnation of the Parachute Division and oddly it doesn't show a recce unit. By this point they were evolving into more of a motorised formation but remained short of MT. There is a very tasty looking Corps level Recce Bn, seemingly with a wheeled Armd Car Coy, two halftrack Rifle Coys and a Heavy Coy. Fallschirmjager KStN are like gold dust and I've never seen anything that details the authorised strengths for the unit type. Gary |

I have found the unit. It would seem to be the Fallschirm-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 12. It was a corps level unit as stated but though it was meant to be equipped with armoured cars and SPWs the former may have never appeared and the latter may have been Kettenkrads. At a low level, Kubelwagens and motorbikes do seem likely. I will keep digging and hoping for more information. |

All I have ever seen listed are single divisional motorised recce companies. Not that different to Allied paratroop divisions. |
