My choice: The Schofield S&W Model 3. A misconception in the article: "This was a distinct advantage in an era where old cap-and-ball revolvers were still prevalent. Even the beloved Colt Single Action Army couldn't beat out the Model 3 since it had to be reloaded one cartridge at a time." As far as I know, one still had to load the cylinder one at a time. The advantage was one could clear all six chambers of the cylinder at once. |

Pyrate Captain, I have to agree with you on your choice of the Schofield. |

Have both, prefer the Colt, Schofield doesn't feel right. Fired the 73 & 86, prefer the 92 (bolt in battery is more secure) Prefer the Stoeger coach gun. Prefer a rifle not a carbine I have shot .22, .32 mag, .38 long colt, .38 Spl, .357 Mag, .44 Spl, .44-40, .44 mag, & .45 long Colt. I Prefer the .45 long colt. Also, various infantry firearms. No, I don't hunt and I don't fish. Strictly targets while on the clock. :^) |

Even though a lot of the cavalry preferred the Schofield, Colt made sure that the ammunition for the Colts would not fit the Remington. The Colt ammo was what we now call the .45 long colt. These cartridges were longer and were too long for the Schofield cylinder. And this was the only pistol cartdrige the army was buying. |
