My family is German American. We had relatives still in Germany. At the end of the war one of my cousins went to look up to old sister we were related two. They freaked out seeing this American soldier coming to their front door. Once they found who he was they were very relieved and welcoming.

The Germans and Japanese ought to be glad it was the Americans who were the dominant power in their occupation. By any historical standard – and certainly compared to the standards they themselves set in occupied countries- ithat occupation was remarkably gentle.

I've always thought the Japanese in particular got off very lightly, given the atrociousness of their conduct – a thing that even now they really won't willingly acknowledge.

The occupation of Japan was pretty much run by MacArthur – and he was very magnanimous in his conduct of that occupation. Plus he also ensured the Soviets had no part in that occupation. Japan owes much to Doug.
