After accidentally falling overboard, American soldier Douglas Hegdahl was captured by North Vietnamese forces in 1967 and sent to the infamous 'Hanoi Hilton' prison camp.

On a day like any other, Hegdahl walked to the main entrance and messily swept the floor. The prison guards paid no attention to the young man, as they believed he was intellectually disabled.

But instead of cleaning, the soldier was memorizing all the activities taking place at the front gate to later recount them to American authorities.

That is because Hegdahl, known around the camp as "The Incredibly Stupid One," was only pretending, as he was just a regular man with a great memory, a distaste for communism, and a flair for acting.

Based on the board name, I presumed this was a story about John Kerry. Interesting. Thanks.

What a great story. I see he still going strong at 77 years of age. I'll bet he was an inspiring instructor in his later years.

Let me preface this with ….this is none of my business as a foreign national (Irish Republic). But John Kerry as the stupidest US serviceman in VN?

This may be an anti-Democratic thing, in which case it is political and should be taken down.

It could be relating to his anti-war campaigns, but he is not Jane Fonda sitting on a AAA gun. He is a highly decorated veteran of the USA, who came home and doubted what was happening in VN. He has more right to that than most on this forum.

Maybe it is getting off the topic title, but TMP is getting deadly quiet, so I will stick my head over the parapet

Don't worry about being quiet, UshCha is now out of the dog house and I'm sure will make things more interesting..
