I've got a number of Airfix M3 halftracks which I've had since the 70's. Having repainted over the gloss dark green I'd quite like to add crew and passengers. Any suggestions as to where I might get any figures for this purpose?

Check out AB 20mm WW2 through eureka usa miniatures. I seem to remember they do 3 different sets of American Half-track crews. They have an English Distributor also.

HAT has a nice set of seated GIs in 1/72.

Yes HaT 8265 WW2 American Tank Riders do work well as generic passengers. The horrible plastic HaT uses makes them difficult to glue to just about anything but protected inside a vehicle like a HT they are OK-ish.

It is a pity you are across the seas – I have a whole box I'd be happy to let go from which I've harvested only the 4 x kneeling bloke with binnos:

Airfix M3s are 1/76 scale, the figures mentioned are all 1/72. Try SHQ which will give you figures better proportioned to the half-tracks.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I was particularly looking for a figure to man the 50 cal in the cupola. I suspect plastic chopping may be the only way here. The SHQ website is down as they've been taken over by Mr Grubby, I'd quite like to see what their crew figures are like. I've got a lot of SHQ in my collection and do like them.

The PSC M3 Halftracks kit comes with such a figure. You might be able to find some spare if somebody has built them without using the crew.

The only problem with these is that the US crew figures in this kit have been moulded with German "Y" strap webbing. The PSC C'wealth halftracks have the same problem with their British crew figures. The problem is easily fixed with a sharp knife and some shaved sprue…
