2000 – 4000 a side

Any information on battles or already written scenarios?

I would look into battles in Missouri as I believe there were many that might fit the description of what you are seeking.

Old Zouave magazines usually had smaller ACW scenarios in them.

Battle of Mill Springs

There are many others.

Possibly Morgan's raid through Indiana and Ohio. Battle of Buffington Island

Battle of Mumford Station, 1864
A Union cavalry force mainly horse with some infantry riding double, is moving toward Talladega Alabama. It is a hub of up to six recruitment muster trading camps and f,or recovered men planning to go back to front. Plenty of War Material there.
Several raid have already been directed there. This time the CSA has deployed around 200 men and one light cannon. Never verified the gun size. It was deployed to the east of the stagecoach road.
The action caused losses to both sides before the Union withdrew.
In the past the Union would withdraw from Talladega when the CSA units posted at Fort Williams, now Sylacauga, arrived after the 20 mile match.

Terrain hilly but not mountainous. Gun was on a hill guarded by a dozen or so men. A rough patch of ground separated them from the road.

By the way the Union 1st Alabama Volunteer Cavalry was cited in one article that I read as having more action ribbons than any other Cavalry unit. Not sure if this was them but makes an interesting option.

Apparently there were several actions on this road. Local lore talks about that one and a few others stories but the Wiki says that it was a larger 1,500 man force of Croxtons force and took place in 1965. CSA had two guns and Union Spenser rifles.

There are a number of others on Wargames Vault as well.

Dranesville, VA (20 Dec 1861), ~5k Federal vs ~4k Confederate. A lovely Confederate OB with four infantry regiments from four different states, plus some cavalry from a fifth, all under the command of a certain Brigadier J.E.B. Stuart.

Ball's Bluff. May be even smaller, but a great little battle all the same. Union forces all on the board and confederates arrive piecemeal.

I would suggest you look at a number of scenario books made by Potomac Press that can be found on Wargame Vault. For at least 6 of the books they cover 12 Regimental actions each, there is a book with 10 Brigade level scenarios and two campaign guides for Pea Ridge and Bermunda Hundred. link

For two battles that you probably won't find premade scenarios for, you might look at Hoovers Gap (TN) or Cloyd's Mountain (VA).

Another approach would be to fight a Brigade or late war Division scale scenario representing a sector of a larger battle, such as Vincent's defense of the Round Tops or Johnson's assault on Culps Hill, both at Gettysburg. Civil War Trust has some excellent maps that show unit dispositions and terrain you could use to set up the battle.

The John Wayne "Horse Soldiers" situation involving military school cadets actually happened in Alabama.
The Union controlled the Tennessee River and would frequently launch raids on the south bank. They secured the north bank early. In 1862, one raid patrolled to the Athens area. The local Boys Military school mustered its students to defend the area. One description has them in blue pants, white shirt with a red sash. One description has the colors red pants, white shirt and blue sash.
After the Union departed, the mothers made their kids take off the uniforms to clean them. The mothers actually burned the uniforms. Lol.

Hi Dave
My Blog Wargame Scenarios covers a lot of historical periods all using the basic mechanics of Fire n Fury rules. (I was sick of having to learn different rule sets.)

There are 15 ACW scenarios that you can access. A number of them were the basis of talks to the local ACW Round Table group.

They might need a little tweaking depending on your rule set. The one I am most pleased with is Lone Jack. Let me know what you think after you play them and I am always looking to improve the scenarios.
Kind Regards

There are many regimental scenario books. I have a bookshelf full of them.
