…Military records obtained by this newspaper show the flag-bearing former U.S. Army sergeant, Michael Thomas Greenawalt, was in fact stationed in Germany, working as a desk clerk during the Vietnam War…

What's the saying, the last chopter out of Saigon must have been pretty big because 1,000 people claimed to have been on it.

I can't understand why people can't just be proud to have served, regardless of MOS or duty station.

Surely your sin will find you out.

79thPA +1,

While coversing with hobby store owner I told him that "I rode ships in the Navy". He replied, "You are the only person I met that did not claim he was in the Special Forces".

Well, to be fair, if you watch TV everyone who was ever in the military was in special forces.

When I was in the Navy (1968-71) I was told that the only difference between a fairy tale and a war story is that one begins "once upon a time" and the other begins "no s--t, there I was."

Feigned valour is a big thing over here too. If even half the folk who claimed to be on the Embassy Roof for Operation Nimrod has been there, the blooming thing would have collapsed.

As for VN, there was a book, was it "Myth Making in America" or was it "Unheralded Victory" carrying a suffix of all contemporary fake claims to service in-country? Some very high profile ones too.

The VA hospital waiting room is full of them.
Sometimes I cannot hardly stand it.
I just sit there and hold my tounge!

Russ,

I gave up on the VA. They were totally useless in my battle with cancer and I had 28 years of service.

No shit, there we were in class, start of the term, fall 1971. Sweating bullets worrying about being drafted, and the teacher breezes in and says, "Gentlemen, you can all take a deep breath and relax. The end of the draft was just announced."

Damn, I thought, that was close. I would have had to register for the draft in just five short years.

And then it was back to math problems and reading and all that stuff.

Found both books and it is "Unheralded Victory" that gives a list of Fake VN Vets, with a very enlightening account of there fantasy stories and high profile. The book is great and very convincing in its premise that US armed forces won the conflict and emerged victorious in every encounter with the VC or MVA. But we know how it ends of course.

Russ, should be able to get your meds mailed to you so you don't have to hear all the stories.

Joe
