"New Museum Focused on Fort Leavenworth?" Topic

George Pettigrew and Brigadier General Bryan Wampler have teamed up together on the Frontier Museum of the U.S. Army Foundation with plans to open a world-class museum by 2027 on the grounds of Fort Leavenworth.

One of the forts of the Permanent Indian Frontier. We visited the place about 37 years ago--I don't remember if there was no need for ID or if my ID covered my wife and five-year-old son as well. We visited the Old Post Chapel, which has memorial plaques for officers who died on duty, mostly during the Indian Wars, but at least one from WWII. These were paid for by their fellow officers, not a grateful government. We also saw a museum on base which had an amazing collection of carriages, all neatly labeled. If you read 19th century novelists, Austen, Dumas, Dickens, they will mention the character riding in a horse drawn conveyance which my mind translates as "carriage." I know that the type of conveyance meant a lot to the people back then and was part of the character's description, like Bond's Astin-Martin or Steed's Bentley; nobody who knows me would believe me driving a Maserati or even a Corvette.

My wife has very fond memories of the time spent there for her dad's posting. As a teen in the early '60s she worked in the then museum.

A whole lot of history there. In 1846 Col. Alexander Doniphan's 1st Missouri Mounted Volunteers were trained and outfitted there before marching west on the Santa Fe Trail to seize New Mexico. Continuing south, they captured Chihuahua after winning the Battle of Sacramento, then proceeded across Northern Mexico to join Zachary Taylor's army near the Gulf Coast. Played an important role in the Missouri-Kansas border war in the 1850's and also in the Civil War, to say nothing of the Indian Wars. It certainly deserves a first class museum.

As I recall from my time at the University of Kansas in the 90s, there was a museum at Ft. Leavenworth.

There is a museum at Fort Leavenworth. It has been recently renewed with exhibits covering the history of the post. It highlights the Lewis and Clark expedition, the importance of the post at the time of western expansion, and includes weapons and equipment from most wars. There is also a museum to the Buffalo Soldiers--the African American troopers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments and the 24th and 25th Infantry as well as various notable African American soldiers including General Colin Powell. Also on exhibit is a large piece of the Berlin Wall. Fort Leavenworth also has many well preserved historical buildings and is the home of the US Army Command and General Staff College.
