The Patagonian War – December 1898
Tensions between Argentina and Chile over control of Patagonia resulted in a naval armaments race beginning in 1890, including warship purchases from the major European powers (England, Italy, Germany and France). In early December 1898, the Argentine Navy preemptively moves to seize the Chilean port of Punta Arenas but is confronted by the Chilean Fleet.

The Naval Battle of Brindisi – May 1915
Following Italy's declaration of war on Austria-Hungary, Italy moves a portion of its battlefleet from Taranto to Brindisi in the Adriatic. With diversionary attacks along the Italian coast, the AH battlefleet manages to close within 80 miles of Brindisi before being sighted by the Italian airship CITTA DI FERRARA. Thus alerted, the Italian put to sea to intercept.

FLEET PROBLEM XIV & XV – December 1933
Between 1923 and 1940, the USN conducted 21 fleet problems which involved live maneuvers of the fleet, a portion of which was allocated to the hypothetical enemy fleet. This scenario posits that FLEET PROBLEM XIV (and XV) actually happened; Japan seizes the Hawaiian Islands and then moves a portion of its fleet of carriers, battleships and cruisers to attack the Panama Canal. Elements of the US Pacific Fleet based on the West Coast (San Francisco and San Diego) move to intercept the Japanese forces which results in an old-fashioned confrontation of battlelines…but with aircraft carriers.
