I don't know if you are being serious or not. It's the gunner's helmet. He is not wearing it because he is not on a mission.

There was no noticeable armor plating on the bottom of the Huey helicopters. Any shots coming at them would be from below, so sitting on your helmet might be protection. I knew a crusty old Vietnam vet who said he had two flak vests, one to wear and one to sit on when he was in a chopper.

My father spent several months in that position….had little good to say about it.
