Hello all,

I am returning to historical wargaming after about a 30 year absence and would like some advice on rules.

I have recently purchased some of the Warlords Epic scale ACW figures and I'm looking for advice on a good set of rules that will work for solo play (probably most of the time) and head to head play.

I currently own Alter of Freedom (which even the author says is not good for solo play), Valor and Fortitude (which is not adapted for ACW), and Stars and Bars (which are a bit too detailed for what I want).

I'm looking for something I can play in an evening that has a feel for the ACW. I currently have enough figures for 22 Epic bases per side with generals and 3 arty per side. I would like to stick with small to medium sized battles if that's possible.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. As I just getting back into historicals I don't have a preferred rule set, thus the request for advice

Thank you in advance for your thoughts on this matter.

I'd stick with Altar of Freedom for ACW. Solid set and good for big battles in an evening.

Stick with what you've got. It's a good set of rules and it's easier to find other players (always depending on where you are). At the same time, you already own these and there's no need to pay for another set until you get more involved in wargaming again. You have enough bases to play small games to learn the rules.

Hi Frozen Gamer,

It seems that Valor & Fortitude is currently moving to the ACW and FPW also.

Thank you all for the quick input and information. I was at the Perry website not long ago and must have missed the Civil War sheets. Thanks for the link.

I think I will stick to those two rule sets. (Valor and Fortitude and Alter of Freedom)

Wouldn't the multi-function Manoeuvre Table that's at the core of Fire & Fury's mechanics greatly facilitate that rule set's adaptation to solo gaming?

If you're playing solo you can use what you feel is right so I'd buy a few copies and try them and then go with what feels right.

First, decide what unit scale you want to do, regiments or brigades. I prefer regiments but that's just me. We use "Mr. Lincoln's War" for regimental gaming.
