There are a lot of dungeon master for hire schemes out there these days. My FLGS stores have leagues and single sessions, like for $20 USD per person

Could a tabletop wargame opponent for hire scheme work? You fancy, I dunno, Napoleons Battles but nobody will play. So you rent a gamer! Very low cost if they don't know the rules to big bucks if they bring their own 40K armies.

I think DMing is a little different than playing. Often the DM brings the terrain, works out the adventure, knows the rules, keeps things going.

Now paying someone to run a campaign or series of linked scenarios who is fluent with the rules, brings the terrain and figures, umpires the game that may be reasonable.

I saw an article about the Dungeon Master for hire thing. I don't Role Play but it seems like a lot of work and not many are very skilled at it. So if you can do it and make more than a free beer at the end of the night why not.

Paying someone to play with me I don't think so I'll play solo and drink with Johnny Walker.

Historical gaming for hire? I think it's only done for wargame holiday weekends where food and lodging are also provided along with several elaborate games. Don't know if anyone is still doing that.

I've thought of hiring an opponent, but the logical place to advertise for one would be the local college, and it would almost surely be misinterpreted.

Not a bad idea in principle. A regular group would be better, of course, but they're pretty much all dead or incapacitated. Feels more and more like that race in "On the Beach."

Maybe hiring an instructor. Perhaps nobody plays Napoleons Battles as suggested because nobody knows how and you cannot teach it well. The problem would be to find someone to teach if all the gamers in town are in your group. If more groups nearby, find one where they play NB and ask someone to teach it. Maybe they would do it because they want to recruit new players. Or offer to pay.

For my son's 12th birthday partyI hired a D&D experienced player to put on a game for the party. My son and friends had heard of this game, but it was not something I knew anything about, so found someone through the local hobby shop to do it. Everyone had a great time, so I did it again a couple of months later.

I tried to DM a few games. Let's just say no one was willing to pay me, either before or after.

I can see it maybe for having someone show up with all the gear and teaching the rules, but I can't see anyone making a living at it.

I think it can be a good solution or enhancement to a game.

It would be great for a group not knowing a set of rules. They can get a person along to show them the game and then those players can choose to take up that game or get rid of it. This would save the group money and time if they did not like the game. The group could then proceed with gusto of they do like the game.

Trouble would be finding a ssuitable individual.

Wargame Holiday Center was it? I've also heard of gaming cruises but events start looking like conventions.

Oh and D&D in a castle was in my feed.

It Rubs The Lotion On Its Skin Or Else It Gets The Hose Again!

Seems a little creepy.

Historical gamers are too cheap to hire somebody. Most likely they would either play solo or travel further to be in a game.
