just a thought
m26/46 pershing used the m3 90mm gun
the m47 patton used the m36 gun capable of firing the m431 heat round

question could the m3 gun of the m26/46 fire the m431 heat round?
any issues pressures etc that would prevent it?

I don't believe that it could. My memory is that the ammo for the M36 had a design difference that made it incompatable with the earlier 90mm gun. I think it had to do with the increased pressures caused by the newer ammo.

Unfortunately, I can't remember the specific difference, and can't find the book that I know has the info.

The older M3 gun ammo would fit into the breech of the newer tanks like the M47 and M48.

The ammo for the newer tanks would not fit into the breech of the older M3 gum breech.

The newer ammo was specifically designed to have higher pressures and to avoid the problem of causing damage, the casing shoulder length was just a bit longer so that the rounds would not quite fit.

So no, to the the later rounds like the HEAT in the older tanks.
