Does anyone have suggestions on how to use the red lantens in a TSATF game ?

William Warner09 Feb 2024 11:57 a.m. PST

Pardon my ignorance. What are red lanterns?

The Red Lanterns were a fighting group of women from the Boxer Rebellion – some thought to have mystic powers- They were younger women. There were also the blue and black lantern groups as well

They were trained in sword fighting and there are accounts of them supporting everything from healing to spying

I use them for a morale plus – not an actual fighting unit

Now I am enlightened! Thanks much.

Wargames Illustrated had an article on Boxer Rebellion for download – A Death in a Dark Continent supplement

They suggest one can treat the lanterns as elite figures

"…Up to 3 warrior units may be upgraded to Elite (+2 points), as members of secret societies with extensive training in martial arts. There were some all-female units, known as Lanterns, whose soldiers were said to have magical powers such as flying and walking on water…."

Huh, not exactly what I thought I was going to get when I opened this thread.

We have one such unit in our Boxer Army and rank them as elite – given them a 1+ in close combat, which is good since they have zero firepower in ranged combat (truly bringing a knife to a gun fight)

The historically correct banners for all four of the "Lantern" units are available in most gaming scales here: link

An in depth article on the Boxers, particularly their flags and the "Lanterns," may be found here: link

Enjoy!
