That is a very fine model indeed.

A lot of hard work too.

Best wishes,

Chris

Funny thing but the north edge of the formal garden actually lacked a wall. South of course and east towards the orchard had brick wall, but I gather even the former is probably now rebuilt on a slightly different position, compared with that of 1815

This is a fun model, but it is inaccurate in important regards, some of which Deadhead points out. First, the roof of the chateau had a double not single pitch. Secondly, the tower on the chateau was not as high. Thirdly, there was a lean-to on the east side of the West barn. Fourthly, the garden extended much further to the East with a star shaped arboretum. Fifthly, as Deadhead points out, there was no wall along the Northside (but there was a formal arboreal walkway). Sixthly, there was a balustrade that separated the garden from the chateau. In addition the model doesn't show the wood, the large or small kitchen gardens or the famous 'killing zone', the ponds or the 'Covered Way'. There is also circumstantial evidence that the Great Barn was thatched not tiled (which is why the fire from the haystack communicated to the roof). Finally, the model shows damage to the walls as a result of the fighting, but in reality the damage was much more extensive with the Westerly and Northerly barns being burnt out and the chateau collapsing.

Good points… thanks.

Other than that, Captain Siborne, what did you think of the play?

Having made a few 1/32 buildings I can tell you there is usually a balance between dead nuts accuracy and the "impression" that the model maker is trying to achieve. Some allowances have to be made for a model used for a Wargame, usually in things like to height of the doors, the width of stair risers and the pitch of the stairs, as well as and overall ground scale.

What we are looking at is a form of Impressionism.

If we weren't told that this is a model of Hougoumont, what is the first thought or impression that anyone on this board would have? I see it and immediately think of Hougoumont as do probably 90% of the people who see these pictures. In that respect, I think that the model achieves its purpose.

I'm impressed by the model making skills of the builder as I can see a number of architectural elements and angles that are difficult to execute. For example, in the last picture of the three, look at the taller building on the far left and the angle of that roof – something very difficult to render.

It looks to me like the model is made for wargaming and I for one would be thrilled to play a game with it.

Fully agreed, Fritze, although I'm not myself a war-gamer.
