Just stepping out of the old world topic for a breath of fresh air.

Yeah, that title.

Looked at a number of Warhammer total war computer game screen shots.

Also comments by Edward scissor hands, I think it was, on YouTube.

He was commenting on how the TOW rules push much wider thinner units. As opposed to more typical WFB square units. The Old 5x4 units of 20, for example.

Looking at the screen shots, as well as earlier talk online, it's clear that GW are aiming, at least in part, at the total war crowd.

Not an issue there.

However, GW seem to be letting the computer game dictate the rules, at least in this one instance of unit formation.

Is anyone who has played both games, perhaps all 3, able to give their thoughts.

I always viewed AOS as the computer game based game, with all its individual models running about on artificial looking landscapes amid plenty of Fire and lighting. Like most modern fantasy computer games seem to appear.

Not so odd then that TOW don't have the magic cards, as neither does the computer game (I assume, at least not real cards).

Perhaps the computer game may give us a clue on how TOW may progress?

TOW don't have the magic cards

They are temporarily out of stock

I mean like the big box of cards that you spread out all over the table. From around 4th-6th?

I have played a lot of Total War and players can adjust their unit formations how they wish from a compact formation of multiple ranks to a wide formation spread out to thinly cover a part of the terrain.

Does one give benefits over another?

Not directly. In the game you get units into combat and the factors are resolved by the computer, as a player you focus on the battle line. Withdrawing units from bad match ups and bringing in other units where they are needed.

A long formation covers a wider amount of space so allows you to protect your flanks better, it also makes units less vulnerable to artillery power. Deeper units tend to be more useful when the terrain is restrictive or if you want to form up missile units to have small frontages so that you can multiple units firing on one.

Generally, wider than deep work better. Over on Yuetube there are various battle videos posted by Legend of Total War where he alters his deplpoyment to meet his tactics . This gives a good idea of how the depth v width issue is played out.
