You were asked – TMP link

Who was the worst US President to serve as Commander-in-Chief during a time of war, declared or undeclared?

And in the final round of voting:

25% said "39. Jimmy Carter"

16% [TIE] said "15. James Buchanan" OR "36. Lyndon B. Johnson"

Bill can I ask the % rating of the current occupant, or was he exempt? If exempt, my vote is Carter.

Madison was robbed.

I am with Robert on this although I can see how President Carter could give him a run for the money

Recent occupants are exempt.

While thousands of drafted citizens went off to war, doing their patriotic duty while others dodged the draft by moving to Canada, Carter rewarded those draft dodgers by pardoning them. For me, that spit on the graves of those who died in the service of their country in Vietnam.

The military Vietnam involvement by the US was political failure going back to the Eisenhower administration. Carter's attempt to close an open sore on American society was a dismal failure for future generations and just the first of embarrassing policies perpetuated upon our society. It was refreshing to see the generation who flocked to join after 9/11 that patriotism was not dead in America. These days, the military struggles to recruit and retain members in the military. Leaving out the current C-in-C of this survey allows assessment of other presidents that would not have even been looked at had he been among the list!

Went through the military in Carter years, so kinda Agee. But giving away billions worth of military hardware to the enemy is something he never did.

Drat.

I think he's exempt because too recent…like the old old old orange man with tiny hands would be as well.

On the battlefield of pewter I would humbly like to nominate myself as worst U.S. General in the AWI, ACW, MAW, and both world wars.

+1 – Dye4minis – All my boyhood friends, who got out of the draft, by college etc. – still do not talk to me, because I went to the Vietnam War. Yes, my son joined the military after 9/11. Right thing to do.

RP has a point none of the other candidates had foreign troops marching through Washington DC and had their office torched

What saved W was Rummy. He had faith that the US military could dominate an entire country with like 30,000 guys in a few weeks. I remember at the time people were scoffing and saying he'd need a million men to do it.

So anyway W had a good record, rolled the Taliban, rolled Saddam, Khaddafi came on side he was so shit-scared of being rolled next. Surged when Bleeped text needed surging, he had it all locked down by '08.

What undid the whole thing was Obama, the CIA and the Arab Spring they instigated and supported. They were jealous of W's success.

The obvious choice for me is George W. Bush. Got us into a quagmire in Iraq and as it turned out for no good reason.

Jimmy Carter didn't get us into a war. His only military action was the abortive attempt to rescue Americans held hostage in Iran. It didn't go well but wasn't his fault.

Carter, an alumni of Annapolis was rated worse than Ford! Hard to believe.
I also served in the Army as an officer. My unit participated in a new weapons firepower demonstration. My unit laid lasers on target for the Copperhead guided misses. They locked up all none American citizens in the army. Only citizens could fire in the demonstration. The Warthogs were the most impressive system.

The Vietnamization was a wasteful policy. We lost massive amounts of weapons. Every Guard lost all of their local trading. M60s and APC.
New funding is important and Star Wars funding started under Carter not Regan.
So many factors but I just think their were worse presidents than Carter.

Carter was not a wartime President so I don't where all the negative votes are coming from. Carter was an Annapolis graduate in nuclear engineering. He was one of the leading experts in the Navy.

"So when Canada's Chalk River nuclear research facility experienced a power surge that damaged its reactor, the U.S. sent Carter and his team. He was one of a few people in the world who could do it."
