There were three shuttle designs for TNG. The first was all smooth curves, which looked great for flight sequences and matched the look of the new Enterprise. But when scenes involving actors with a full scale shuttle were to be filmed, the fancy curvy shuttle was too difficult to build cheaply, so a smaller boxy shuttle with sharp, angled planes was created, as it could be made of plywood and other simple flat materials. Later this design was discarded in favor of a larger vessel with curves for the forward cockpit area, but which still retained the flat sides (dressed up) and boxy nacelles— this is the version which became the toy. Of course, it didn't divide down the center like the toy! |

Thanks for reading and commenting. I don't adhere to a strict Star Trek universe so I mix and match to my pleasure. Bunkermeister |
