A wonderful military artist whose artwork graced the pages of many an issue of Military Modelling magazine. For my money, best of all was the series he did on French Napoleonic hussar regiments: the 3e, 4e, 5e and 9e Hussars. I have the issues of all but the last of these and was wondering if anyone could help me identify the issue in which the 9e Hussars was published; it must have been in the early 1990s.

Incidentally, for any fans of Doug Hagger's work, there is an excellent volume, edited by Charles Grant and published by Caliver Books, entitled 'Napoleon's Light Cavalry', which I thoroughly recommend.

I can't find anything for the 9e but found these articles by Doug Hagger.

Military Modelling. Vol. 5. No. 11. November 1975 13th Hussars DH Hagger

Military Modelling. Vol. 6. No. 4. April 1976. Uniform of the Month – French 11th Hussars 1793-1814.

Military Modelling. Vol 6 No 2. Feb 76 1st Hussars

The online indices for Military Modelling are all for the earlier years. The ones above are all much earlier than the 1990s. If you have the dates for the other articles, that may help.

Trockledockle01 Feb 2024 10:07 a.m. PST

The quick answer for 9th Hussars is Military Modelling July 1992 page 42 and 43. I have found a couple of other hussar articles and will post later today.

I have them! I have all the issues right up to about 2008 when I could stand its new format no longer. I'll have a look tomorrow and see what I can find, though I can't recall if Haggar did much after the 1980s.

You never know! I may even post his artwork

Here's my list of the articles I can find by Doug Hagger on French Napoleonic Hussars.

Military Modelling. Vol. 5. No. 11. November 1975 13th Hussars

Battle, February 1977 (Not Military Modelling), 13th Hussars 1813-1814.
This seems to be a follow on from the one above.

Military Modelling. Vol. 6. No. 4. April 1976 11th Hussars

Military Modelling. Vol 6 No 2. Feb 76 1st Hussars

Military Modelling March 1977 6 & 10th Hussars

Military Modelling August 1977 3rd Hussars

Military Modelling November 1978 4th Hussars

Military Modelling December 1991 5th Hussars

Military Modelling July 1992 9th Hussars

I agree with Dibble that there wasn't much published after 1978. The articles published in 1991 and 92 are after a gap of 13 years. However I haven't checked the 1980's fully.

I've gone through the issues I own, content pages on eBay listings, indices I can find online and 1990-95 magazines in a reference library. It is possible that I've missed something. These are the ones haven't seen:

1981 Jan and Nov 81
1982 Sept, Oct, Nov
1983 Jan, May Aug, Nov, Dec
1984 Jan, April, May, July-Dec
1985 Whole year
1986 Jan-Mar, Aug, Oct, Nov
1987 Whole Year
1988 March-Oct, Dec
1989 Jan, Jun

I suspect that there may not be any amongst these but don't know for certain. The 2nd, 7th, 8th and 12th Regiments are missing.

Dibble, it would be great if you are able to check the ones I haven't seen as that would give us a complete list (assuming there is nothing after 1995).

Thanks for the list. A great help. It'll save me a lot of time looking. As long as my scanner is still up to it, I'll post the artworks and articles that goes with them.

Here we go (The editing a bit naff)

The February 1976 is missing because it's missing from my issue? I have no idea why its missing but pages 87 to 106 are gone and I'm blinking annoyed.

Haggar did other uniform items for Military Modelling but they were pertaining the late 19th, early 20th century German army.

Many thanks indeed gentlemen; much appreciated. I can, in fact, add two more to the list above: a very nice pair of articles on the French in the Peninsular War, published in the August and September 1980 issues.

One surprising omission from the list is the 2nd Hussars but perhaps they too are covered in a not yet tracked down issue.

dibble03 Feb 2024 1:30 p.m. PST

I've ordered a new copy of Feb 1976. when I get it, I'll post that article too.

Here are the two August/September 1980 Spain Articles

Trockledockle03 Feb 2024 2:14 p.m. PST

Thanks very much Dibble. Do you have the December 1991 article with the 5th Hussars and the Battle Magazine of February 1977 with the 13th Hussars? The February 1976 article on the 1st Hussars starts on page 87 (it would, wouldn't it) and has a paragraph on page 92. There is another article in Battle (March 77) on the 2nd Regiment of Chasseurs of the Young Guard.

Duc de Brouilly03 Feb 2024 2:18 p.m. PST

I had an interesting picture to post but, as I understand it, you can only post something on TMP if it's already online.

dibble03 Feb 2024 2:40 p.m. PST

Here is the 5th that I overlooked

And one for you Prussian fans.

I subscribe to Photobucket.

What Picture are you trying to post?

Duc de Brouilly03 Feb 2024 2:47 p.m. PST

Just a sketch of a 5th Hussar officer but only have it saved on my own computer.

dibble03 Feb 2024 11:26 p.m. PST

Oops! Russian fans. Not Prussian fans as it says above.

dibble05 Feb 2024 1:36 p.m. PST

Here's the 1st Hussars from the February 1976 edition.

dibble05 Feb 2024 5:27 p.m. PST

Short of going into the 2000s. This is the only other Hagger I could find.

Perhaps he did some other articles for Battle Magazine?

Duc de Brouilly06 Feb 2024 4:20 a.m. PST

Thank you again Dibble for this cornucopia. Hagger's work deserves to be better known.

The 70s and 80s seem to have have been something of a golden age with magazines such as Military Modelling regularly commissioning work by the likes of Doug Hagger, Bob Marrion and the Fostens. The same in France with Uniformes and Tradition publishing the work of Rigo and Michel Petard. There doesn't seem to be anything like that these days, either magazine or artist: those French magazines are defunct and, from what I can see, Military modelling mostly seems to be about military vehicles.

Duc de Brouilly

Well It hit the buffers I believe when the magazine was taken over by another publisher in the 2000s. Then they started pushing more issues per year. Then to cap it all, It became focused on armour modelling. I think I cancelled my subscription in 2006 after 35 years. but I have the odd issue up to about 2008.

We also had what I reckon was the best military magazine ever. Military illustrated. That too was wrecked by another publisher after about issue 60.

Going back to Military Modelling and the illustration contributors. A criminally overlooked artist who also had his work published in Military Illustrated) was the late and great Rick Scollins. One day, I may post all of the works that I have, produced by him.

I also have the Tradition Magazines. Though French (I can't read French) is another top tier magazine. I do believe that I published all the excellent, over 200 Rigo plates

Trockledockle09 Oct 2024 2:35 p.m. PST

Found another Doug Hagger article in Battle Magazine November 1977 pages 470, 471 and 490. It's on the Guard Mamelukes.
