Thanks nine

I don't think this did much for morale, but I am NOT saying it contributed to the accident:

Trump fired the F.A.A. director on 1/20. On 1/21 he froze air traffic controller hiring. On 1/22 he disbanded the Aviation Safety Advisory Committee. On the 28th F.A.A. employees got a retirement buyout letter. I got this from my Dem Congressman. Trump had his reasons,I am sure, but more chaos had to result from this kind of abrupt management. Public service is not a business.

It reminds me of him closing the WH Office of Pandemic Response a year before Covid. May have made no difference. There are always ways to blame someone else for various things when something goes wrong. Both sides have done it many times. What happens going forward from this incident? Hopefully lessons learned.

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP02 Feb 2025 6:46 p.m. PST

Please read scare headline of article and paragraph 1.
Then read paragraph 2 and later which contradicts both.

"Air traffic controllers were initially offered buyouts | AP News"

"Just a day before a deadly midair collision at Reagan National Airport outside Washington, D.C., employees at the Federal Aviation Administration were sent an offer to resign with eight months' pay.

The union for air traffic controllers recommended to its members that they not accept Tuesday's offer, because the FAA had not decided which positions would be included in the resignation plan. An official for the Office for Personnel Management, the U.S. government's human resources arm, said Friday that controllers weren't eligible for the resignation plan or subject to the hiring freeze across much of the rest of federal government.

The crash Wednesday that killed all 67 people on board an American Airlines jet and an Army helicopter has renewed focus on the real-world implications of President Donald Trump's push to slash the federal bureaucracy.

There's no evidence that the White House effort to downsize government played any role in the collision, with shortages of air traffic controllers long predating Trump taking office. But those who've worked in air safety say that those who try to dramatically shake up the federal workforce need to remember that lives are on the line."
….
"An official with OPM, which made the resignation offers, said air traffic controllers are exempt from a hiring freeze that Trump announced on taking office on Jan. 20 and they are not eligible for a buyout even though they were sent the offer. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal government operations."

The DEEP STATE is in fear and are reacting accordingly.

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP02 Feb 2025 9:00 p.m. PST

I know my Congressman personally and IMO he was not making up any of what I
I relayed here. There may be conflicting versions. Not eligible, but they sent them the offer? The deep state is a right wing construct which I don't buy. The government agencies defend their own turf, are often wasteful, but they also provide vital services. The Trump loyalty purges may be the most overt attempt yet to create an internal power structure loyal to a particular ideology.

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP03 Feb 2025 6:34 a.m. PST

Tort I'll let you worry for me. 🙂 I also have relatives doing that as well, in panic mode. 😱

Yesterday kristi noem was at the border with the agents, also with ice agents on raids. Hegseth is on his way to the border and was present immediately after the crash and fulfilling anti DEI initiatives in the military. Rubio was in Panama and elsewhere. Duffy at both air crashes. .The president traveled to Carolina and California site of the disasters. He has had conferences almost daily, taking questions from everyone. Daily mind you, not every 6 months with a list, teleprompters and people to escort him off the stage. Other secretaries have been just as active. At least those the congress has allowed to be appointed.

For the short amount of time, lots have taken place and people seem to be taking responsibilities. To me, a welcome change from the last 4 years.

Here is just a short list of "winning", IMHO. Some will not see these as accomplishments, but they were promises. Also the Deep State, MSM and those who opposed the President are in panic… and fear tactics are rampant.

I know I have missed much.. talks with Zelensky and Putin.. etc.

Will we be better off in 4 years. I hope so. Some will not see it that way, but than I and friends viewed the last 4 years as a disaster as we did much of the Obama administration.

"NEW: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum folds, says she agreed to send 10,000 troops to the U.S. border after a "good" call with President Trump.

Remarkable.

Sheinbaum released the following post on X (translated):

"We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty; we reached a series of agreements:

1. Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl.

2. The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico.

3. Our teams will begin working today on two fronts: security and trade.

4. They are pausing tariffs for one month from now."

The development comes hours after Trump told reporters what he needed to see to lift tariffs on Mexico. "

First Columbia, than Venezuela, than Panama, Mexico and now Canada

"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday afternoon a deal had been reached averting US tariffs and Canadian retaliation for at least 30 days.

Trudeau said Canada had agreed to go ahead with a $1.3 USD-billion border plan it had already drawn up, alongside fresh measures aimed at securing the Canada-US border.

"Canada is making new commitments to appoint a fentanyl czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada-US joint strike force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering," Trudeau wrote online.

"I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 USD million."

He said the proposed tariffs would be "paused for at least 30 days while we work together.""

Saw a similar claim today, but the NYT was the alleged recipient. That kind of stuff will be hard to defend.

Nine pound round05 Feb 2025 1:29 p.m. PST

I don't know how on earth they think they are going to ultimately disestablish Federal agencies that have been authorized by statute- I think some of this get-rid-of-DoE and feed-USAID-into-the-woodchipper stuff is bound to get walked back by the courts, sooner or later.

But what it seems like to me is an enormous raid, which will have two effects whose significance for the political system is going to be hard to overstate. One, given the chaos it's creating, it has individual members of the bureaucracy worrying about their fates, rather than pursuing independent policies, and two, it's going to seriously disrupt the influence and operations of the NGO world, and probably threaten the financial viability of a lot of NGOs, most of which depend at least in part on Federal funding. That's going to have significant consequences- potentially even for the midterms- because of its downstream impacts on fundraising and messaging.

It would be interesting to know whether this was conceived deliberately on those terms, or whether the USAID leadership simply provided a convenient target, and they decided to make an example of them first. The fact that DoE followed USAID suggests they've identified certain agencies as known avenues of political influence, regardless of which administration is in power, and are trying to wreck that particular capability.

Nine pound round05 Feb 2025 1:29 p.m. PST

Stuff like this is just dynamite. I mean, I would need a lot of connecting dots to go from a USAID grant to this article before I believed that it was directly inspired by government money, but when you come right down to it, the basic fungible of money creates a terrifically suspicious link.

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP05 Feb 2025 4:01 p.m. PST

As to USAID

Trump may not have the right to shut a department down, that will be debated in court. But he has not said shut down, instead rolled into another department, A technicality but an important difference.

USAID was formed by executive order.

"While USAID was created through an executive order by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, it was established as its own government agency by Congress in 1998."

"Taxpayer funding for USAID doubled from the beginning of Trump's first term in 2017 to the end of President Joe Biden's, rising from $205 USD billion in 2017 to $42.4 USD billion in 2023."

I will note, all 3 of these happened under Democrats.

Some of it expenditures:

Here is the list of USAID expenses:

* $1.5 USD million to advance DEI in Serbia's workplaces
* $70,000 USD for the production of a DEI musical in Ireland
* $47,000 USD on a transgender opera in Colombia
* $32,000 USD for a transgender comic in Peru
* $37 USD million to the World Health Organization
* $16 USD million in funding for institutional contractors in gender development offices
* $4 USD million of funding for the Center for Climate-Positive Development
* $12 USD million in support services to the Bureau for Resilience, Environment, and Food Security
* $6 USD million in non-emergency funding for redundant administrative supports for the Center of Excellence
* $3 USD million in non-emergency funding to provide evaluation services for planning and learning programs
* $600,000 USD to fund technical assistance for family planning in Latin America
* $2.5 USD million for electric vehicles for Vietnam
*

She noted $9 USD million in humanitarian aid to feed civilians in Syria that allegedly ended up in the hands of terrorists, as well as another $2 USD million spent on Moroccan pottery classes and promotion.
Other projects included trade assistance to Ukraine to pay for models to attend Fashion Weeks events in New York City, London and Paris and millions spent to help Afghans grow crops instead of opium.

"The results: opium poppy cultivation across the country nearly doubled, according to the UN," she wrote.

"USAID asked, ‘Can you tell me how to get how to get to Sesame Street?' and ended up in Iraq," she wrote in another post. "USAID authorized a whopping $20 USD million to create a Sesame Street in Iraq."

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP05 Feb 2025 4:10 p.m. PST

Well lets see what happens. China can't wait for us to surrender influence anywhere in the world. I always thought this money was a small price to pay for some good will. And there is already some question about why we are talking about rebuilding Gaza, costing who knows how many billions. America first is not clear. I would support family planning in Latin America however. And maybe the Irish musical.

Nine pound round05 Feb 2025 4:14 p.m. PST

Right, I know it was created by executive order- but I assume somewhere in there, Congress explicitly authorized it by statute- that's typically how Congress sets policy and budgetary guidelines for Federal agencies.

I know I mentioned the NGOs earlier, but one critical point: if the left (and not narrowly the Democratic Party, but the larger body of people with that general political tendency) has a center of gravity, it's the "community" of NGOs. Defunding strikes right at the heart of a constellation of organizations that manages cash flow, develops ideas, and keeps people employed. Knocking out the cash dramatically reduces the political reach and force of the NGOs. I said earlier it sounded like a raid; in practical terms, the impact may be more like a lobotomy.

Subject: FCC launches probe into Soros-backed radio station that revealed live locations of undercover ICE agents

Ok, entering the country illegally can be a misdemeanor or a felony. So how is broadcasting the location of "undercover ice agents" NOT aiding and abetting?

This whole thing is astonishing. For most of my life, election promises to the contrary (and Trump 45 included), it has always seemed as if government only got larger, and took on more responsibilities (with the exception of the line Army, which somehow never got that treatment). It seemed like the ratchet only went one way.

More has changed in a month than in the last thirty years.

It seems to me ACW 2.0 may be going on in the Congress and some in the media. The Parties and their followers have cleary set up the dividing lines.

E.g. Yesterday and currently the Dems are in the streets going wild attacking the current POTUS and his admin. They are vehement in their hatred for him, his admin and the GOP, etc. One Dem even wants to start impeachment procedures. Just saw it on FOX.

The things that are being said, including someone may die, they will be fighting in the streets, impeach the POTUS, etc., etc. Kind of sounds like a modern virtual civil war.

Yes, things are moving faster than I can track them. In the past, if something got done… or didn't. It would take months to go through conferences and votes, court challenges and pork. Yes.. the deep state of life long politicians and bureaucrats, more interested in padding their pockets and insuring their next election, or guarantee their future job.

But then most of those politicians could be controlled by "Big <whatever>" with donations.

Case in point today:

"Elon Musk has pledged to deploy his "DOGE" cost-cutting squad inside the innards of America's air traffic control system, promising Wednesday to "make rapid safety upgrades" to the complex web of software, hardware, facilities and people that keep planes from crashing into each other.

"With the support of President @realDonaldTrump, the @DOGE team will aim to make rapid safety upgrades to the air traffic control system," Musk posted to his social media platform X. Musk's comment came shortly after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy posted that he'd spoken to DOGE and that the squad plans to "plug in" to the air traffic control system to help make unspecified upgrades to unknown systems.

The rapid-fire set of remarks, following on the heels of a speech Duffy gave before a conference of state DOT officials on Wednesday, comes roughly a week after the worst U.S. airline crash in two decades, with investigators still in the early stages of their probe. On Wednesday the last of the crash victims were identified, and salvage of the passenger airplane and the U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter that hit it are ongoing."
