Actually 5 have been elected without majority votes. Bush(maybe if we had reviewed hanging chads in states other than certain areas of Florida, he would had the popular too. 😉)
and Trump (I won't comment).

John Quincy Adams 1824. This one was a real cluster F.
Rutherford B. Hayes (1876) actually another cluster.
Benjamin Harrison (1888)

Interesting:
"1824 election, which was the first U.S. presidential election where the popular vote was recorded.[1] In these cases"

Actually IMO we came our closest to one man rule twice. Washington, they would have let him do pretty much anything. Fortunately he did not have that ambition. He was not a Cromwell.

FDR, elected 4 times and probably could have been more. I think he had the ambition. Fortunately he died in office.

"Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President of the United States four times: 1932, 1936, 1940, and 1944. Prior to the third-term election of 1940, it was a presidential tradition set by George Washington that presidents only held the office for two terms. As a result of FDR's unprecedented four terms, the Twenty-second Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified in 1951, limiting all future presidents to two elected terms."

Some excellent analysis of the impact of media messaging over the last two decades, its impact on (and intimate ties with) foreign policy, and some warnings for the future. In the department of "what just happened," this seems to me to have a certain explanatory power.

I don't know how much play this has gotten, but it should and it is things like this that I believe, have caused our divisions.

Some crimes of those in the first 1500 were horribly bad, but these… 🤬

"President Biden is commuting the sentences of nearly all the inmates on federal death row, a move that comes not even two weeks after he went through with the "largest single-day grant of clemency" in American history, the White House announced Monday.

Of the 40 inmates on federal death row, according to DeathPenaltyInfo.org, Biden is commuting 37 men sentenced to death, reclassifying their sentences to life without the possibility of parole.

The three inmates not included are: Robert Bowers, who is responsible for the mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in 2018, which left 11 people dead; Dylann Roof, a White supremacist who killed nine Black parishioners at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015; and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who worked with his now-dead brother to perpetuate the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing that killed three people and injured hundreds.

Biden, who only supports the death penalty at the federal level for "terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder," said this move will prevent President-elect Donald Trump's administration from "carrying out the execution sentences that would not be handed down under current policy and practice," according to the White House statement."

So remember, your death means less, unless you are killed in a hate crime or by a terrorist.

Are not they all "hate crimes"? If you are raped and murdered, is there any less hate than a race on race crime? Are you any less dead?

Just some of those commuted

"The convicted murderers who will now escape execution include: Marcivicci Barnette, who killed a man in a carjacking and his ex-girlfriend; co-defendants Brandon Basham and Chadrick Fulks, who kidnapped and killed a woman after escaping prison; Anthony Battle, who killed a prison guard; Jason Brown, who stabbed a postal worker to death; Thomas Hager, who committed a drug-related killing; David Runyon, who participated in the murder-for-hire plot of a Naval officer; Thomas Sanders, who kidnapped and killed a 12-year-old girl; Rejon Taylor, who carjacked, kidnapped and killed a restaurant owner; and Alejandro Umana, who killed two brothers inside a restaurant."

Now we the taxpayers will support them, until they die.

I think that overall the death penalty prisoners still spend years in jail, are allowed numerous appeals, and generally cost the state more that life in prison due to numerous legal proceedings we get stuck paying for. And its a drop in the bucket compared to prison totals.

We are always well over a million people in prison, always the highest per capita rate among major countries.

Death penalty states almost all have higher murder rates than non-death penalty states.

The pardon/commutation issue does not feel that divisive to me. Trump caused some anger with his as well, but people moved on. It may be that these powers are too broad, but given that the President can no longer be prosecuted for crimes while in office, executive power has grown considerably across the board.

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP23 Dec 2024 8:13 a.m. PST

Yes appeal time is way too long and should be rectified. But I blame liberal judges, liberal lawyers, liberal politicians and groups like the ACLU for that waste of time and money. I would rather pay though and have them alleviated. Otherwise, eventually they will have a liberal judge get them off and out, or escape and more innocents die needlessly.

On these pardons, I do blame those currently in power…. And that is not just Biden, but those who "recommended" these to him. Some of which he will give "get a pardon free" cards to, before he is done. Mark it down.

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP23 Dec 2024 9:07 a.m. PST

I think these death row appeal procedures were all approved by the SC long ago, as they are considered a safeguard to make sure the prisoner has a chance to escape execution if he is not guilty or there are extenuating circumstances. I could be wrong, but they are not really political, I believe.

Trump also had people recommend pardons to him, even a Kardashian, I think. Some he pardoned worked for him or were personal acquaintances also. It never looks good. I doubt that Cheney committed a crime. I hope that Trump will get to work and let some of this slide and not go the route of his predecessor, whom he blames for too many witch hunts. Not many here will agree, perhaps.

Also, I don't care about the Panama Canal or Greenland. My worry is that this stuff draws attention away from ending Ukraine war in a day. Peace in the ME. And most of all, the border. There will be the typical honeymoon period after the inauguration. But if these issues are not addressed, or if we keep hearing that he will be letting us know in a couple of weeks, there will be reaction, no matter who he blames. He holds all the cards.

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP23 Dec 2024 9:29 a.m. PST

The Panama Canal is typical Trump bluster, attempting to get Panama to reduce costs to US shipping, which increased by 15%. Teddy would be proud.

Much of what he says is purposeful hyperbole.

I can't make excuses for the forgiveness of all but 3 death row inmates.

Also I'll ask, if this was really a Biden heartfelt concern about the death penalty, why 3 not forgiven? Hate crimes and a terrorist killers are unforgivable? I would say they are all equally unforgivable, especially to those brutally killed and their families.

I hate the concept of hate crimes.

Lastly, those sentenced to death, did not wait this long in the past.

"When the constitution was written, the time between sentencing and execution could be measured in days or weeks. A century later, the Supreme Court noted that long delays between sentencing and execution, compounded by a prisoner's uncertainty over time of execution, could be agonizing, resulting in "horrible feelings" and "immense mental anxiety amounting to a great increase in the offender's punishment." (In re Medley, 1890, as cited in Foster v. Florida, 2002). The time frame at issue in In re Medley: four weeks.

But in the wake of the Supreme Court-mandated suspension of the death penalty in 1972 and its declaration in 1976 that meaningful appellate review was a prerequisite to any constitutionally acceptable scheme of capital punishment, numerous reforms have been introduced in an attempt to create a less arbitrary system. This has resulted in lengthier appeals, as mandatory sentencing reviews have become the norm, and continual changes in laws and technology have necessitated reexamination of individual sentences."

Even since 1983 to 2018 shows how ridiculous it has become.

In 1982 it was 74 months average.
In 2018 it was 264 months average.

Some other stats.

The following information is taken from the Bureau of Justice Statistics: Capital Punishment and is the statistical data of the death-row population for 12/31/2019.

"56.1% of the death-row population is White, 41.4% is Black, 1.6% is Asian/Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, and .8% is American Indian/Alaska Native. BJS records Hispanic/Latino origin as ethnicity, not race, however, and many Latinx prisoners (who comprise 15.1% of death row) are listed by BJS as White.
Men make up 98% of those on death row; women make up 2%
The median education level of death-row prisoners is 12th grade.
55.5% of death-row prisoners have never married; 19.6% are divorced or separated; 21.3% are currently married; and 3.6% are widowed.
28.2% of death-row prisoners are age 25 to 44. and 54.8% are 50 or older.
9.5% of death-row prisoners had a prior homicide conviction.
67.8% had prior felony convictions."

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP23 Dec 2024 10:21 a.m. PST

Also, it's a very low percentage of prisoners who are on death row, maybe 1%.
I think appeals and delays grew out of lots more lawyers around and media coverage. Lawyers seem to love being on TV.

Here is another question: who should be responsible for the maintenance of bases in Greenland? The US, NATO or Denmark? Right now it is the US. Seems to me, since we provide our military in support of our allies as well, the cost should not be all on the US. Also others use the base. In addition the Danes benefit by the contract being given to contractors on island (a requirement from what I read). So is this another negotiation methodology?

"A nearly $4 USD billion U.S. Air Force contract has been awarded to ensure the ongoing operation of a strategic base in Greenland, the Defense Department said in a statement. The $3.95 USD billion deal, awarded to Nuuk, Greenland-based contractor Inuksuk A/S, provides for an array of operation and maintenance requirements at Thule Air Base — the military's northernmost site. The main mission there involves monitoring polar-orbiting satellites and staying on the lookout for ballistic missile launches, as well as supporting any additional needs north of the Arctic Circle.

Some more.

"Inuksuk A/S, a joint venture company between Greenland and the United States, pays for the maintenance of Thule Air Base in Greenland:
Inuksuk A/S
Ownership
51% owned by Permagreen Grønland A/S, 49% owned by Vectrus Services Greenland APS
Contract
$3.95 USD billion, 12-year ordering period, expected to be completed by 2034
Services
Airfield operations, civil engineering, environmental management, food services, health services, supply and fuel logistics, and more
The new contract is expected to have a significant economic impact on Greenland, including:
More Greenlandic workers, apprentices, and interns
Tax income
Benefits to local households and the national economy
The contract is based on guidelines that include:
The final say about decisions must be made in Denmark or Greenland
Half of the employees must be Greenlandic
Managers must reside in Greenland
The contract is a substantial source of income for Greenland's treasury, providing approximately $30 USD million in revenue. "

"US in negotiations with Taliban to swap Americans in Afghanistan for prisoner in Guantanamo
Muhammad Rahim al Afghani is alleged to have been a close associate of Usama bin Laden"

…..

"Then in November 2023, the Guantanamo Bay prison review board cited Rahim's work for senior al Qaeda members and his participation in attacks on U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan as reasons to keep him in custody, according to The Wall Street Journal.

"The developments come as the Biden administration on Monday announced the transfer of 11 Yemeni detainees, including two former bodyguards for bin Laden, being held at a U.S. naval base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba to Oman, which has agreed to help re-settle them, amid steps to reduce the population at the controversial military facility. "

Were these Americans left behind after the "withdrawal"? Were they "allowed" to travel there afterwards?

Thoughts on the whole thing?

…..

Yes, I think we are down to the teens for those still imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay.

Yes from my link:

"Rahim reportedly wrote a letter that year to the board describing himself as older and in poor health, while adding that if he is released he would like to pursue his love of cooking and possibly open a food truck or booth.

"I am confident that the United States does not fear that I would return to a battlefield that no longer exists," The Wall Street Journal cited him as saying. "

😢 poor baby!

How many who died on 9/11 would have liked to pursue what they enjoyed? How about our soldiers who have died?

He like most that are or were at Guantánamo Bay, Showed no mercy to we "infidels". Why should we and did we show mercy to them?

Dames if he does and dammed if he doesn't. Not enough public info to weigh the risks. Who gets released and what threat would they pose? Getting our people home is important. We don't know what the insiders know, or whether they are getting this right.

I think it depends on who gets swapped, for whom, and the potential dangers. Trump denied the whole Taliban treaty release mess later, but some of his advisors have said otherwise, and some have changed their tune to escape retribution. Dealing with the Taliban is never a good look, but I would try to get those people out unless it puts us in danger. Trump helped release 5000 Taliban, that is going too far.
.
Marine Lt.Gen. HR McMaster:
"Our secretary of state [Mike Pompeo] signed a surrender agreement with the Taliban," McMaster said on Bari Weiss' podcast. "This collapse goes back to the capitulation agreement of 2020. The Taliban didn't defeat us. We defeated ourselves."

Biden's judgement during the evac was a disaster. Who can we trust to get this latest deal right?

Trump helped release 5000 Taliban

That was actually a prisoner swap deal, 5000 Taliban for 1000 POWs held by the Taliban (mostly Afghan government, but included other nationalities including Americans).

Btw, Nancy Pelosi hailed the deal as "an important initial step toward advancing security and stability in Afghanistan"

Actually IIRC, when the current POTUS and some of his appointed minions[who are probably actually running the gov't], let a few hundred or thousands(?) old fart of islamic terrorists. When he/they actually abandoned Bagram, A'stan. And nearby camps full of terrorists were released by their Taliban/AQ brothers.

Sadly I can't remember all the facts of this "huge prison break" …. old fart

After the disastrous A'stan Withdrawal Debacle. Many of the locals that assisted the US were left behind. But many that got on those USAF birds flying to the USA. Had 0 to do with supporting the USA war effort. Most actually on those birds were barely even vetted. Some males were found to have 13-14 years old "brides". Just like on the US borders, just show up and you are in !

But many of those that the Biden admin left behind who actually worked with the USA. Had to be rescued by retired/former US Spec. Ops troops. E.g. Green Berets, SEALSs, etc. And that went on for over a year IIRC. Hell, it still may be going on!

But hey, no one they knew would be affected waaay back in the WH/DC.

Nancy Pelosi hailed the deal as "an important initial step toward advancing security and stability in Afghanistan"
If I said how I really feel about this individual, I'd be DH'd here. And investigated by the FBI, etc.

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP08 Jan 2025 5:07 p.m. PST

I think the Taliban had already defeated the Afghan government troops and basically won their war by the time of the evac. Many of those fighters had been let out of prison by the Trump agreement, I am thinking. There is blame for every US POTUS back to Bush/Cheney, IMO. At least.

I'll take McMasters assessment over Pelosi's any day. On anything.

But back to the hostages, 35th. I think – do the deal if Rahimi is no longer a threat. One of those Americans was a Delta airline mechanic touring the country. Why? He could have gone to Cancun… what makes a handful of Americans go to these places run by terrorists and get thrown into prison?

"United States Capitol Police have identified the man arrested Wednesday after allegedly trying to light a car on fire while President-elect Donald Trump was paying his respects to former President Jimmy Carter, who was lying in state at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C.

Virginia man Adrian J. Hinton, 35, is the suspect, police announced on X Thursday morning.

He faces charges of unlawful activities after allegedly putting a flaming bag on top of a car near the Grant Memorial at around 5:30 p.m.

The bag burned out without igniting anything else, authorities said.

It was packed with accelerants and Hinton's vehicle had been spray-painted, according to Capitol Police.

Hinton's arrest was one of two threatening incidents at the Capitol Wednesday, when Trump, lawmakers and thousands of Americans lined up to pay their respects to Carter."

One of two huh?

"Police also apprehended a man who, about three hours earlier, allegedly arrived at the Capitol with an array of knives, including a machete that he tried to get through a security checkpoint with an X-ray machine at the Capitol Visitor Center.

Mel J. Horne, 44, faces multiple counts of carrying a dangerous weapon."

But .. they believe there is no connection. 🤔 Nor to the previous assassination attempts on Trump? or the 2 bombings? Which ones are they not connected to? Just random acts of violence? What's that officer barbrady? OH! "Nothing to see here. Move along now".

"Capitol Police said they did not believe the two incidents were connected. Neither arrest interrupted the service for Carter"

I think the Taliban had already defeated the Afghan government troops and basically won their war by the time of the evac.
Before the withdrawal, the Taliban and AQ, with some assistance from Pakistan, were gobbling up provinces like a Pacman game. US Military and Intel say this. But the Biden admin did = 0, as usual. Many US Military and Intel thought it would be good move to leave about 2500 troops most if not all in Bagram. Like we have in Iraq[2500+] and Syria[1000+]. To keep a close watch on things, etc.

At Bagram, we had strike aircraft and gunships right there. Readily on call, plus supplies being flown in many times a week. By USAF, etc. assets. With A'stan having no coastline, etc. aircraft would need 8hrs(+) flying in for strikes. Much, much too long to be effective.

Bagram being a largely built-up/fortified by US assets. With a large airfield, troop positions, etc. Based on its location, with an 8-mile perimeter. Would be very hard it for any local enemy forces to attack. Let alone successfully …

Also being between Iran and China, it had strategic importance. Something many in the WH/DC once again demonstrated their shortsightedness. Among other things …

Many of those fighters had been let out of prison by the Trump agreement, I am thinking.
IIRC there were a number of Taliban, etc. prisoners held in camps near or in Bagram. They were not freed until the US was gone. Again, IIRC. old fart

There is blame for every US POTUS back to Bush/Cheney, IMO. At least.
"Success has many fathers … but failure in an orphan." I think that is a Russian saying …

Hinton's arrest was one of two threatening incidents at the Capitol Wednesday, when Trump, lawmakers and thousands of Americans lined up to pay their respects to Carter."
This sort of event draws out the freaks, nutjobs, etc. I hope security has tightened by a factor of 10. With the recent attempts at Trump's life.

Maybe the USSS should have a Tactical Ops Ctr. Where additional assets can coordinate ops. Maybe Delta, SEALs, SF, Rangers and USMC sniper teams could be deployed to back up the USSS.

Subject: Biden pardons Anthony Fauci, Mark Milley as shield against potential retribution by Trump

Joe Biden has pardoned Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley and members of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

Also capitol hill police who testified. More to follow to today.

From CNN:

"The pardons, coming in the final hours of Biden's presidency, amount to a stunning flex of presidential power that is unprecedented in recent presidential history. They serve to protect several outspoken critics of the incoming president, including former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, whom Trump has vowed retribution against."

35th..the Trump pardons list, just to keep it "fair and balanced"😉! I am trying to stay focused on the things I hope will happen, like securing the border, ending some of the woke madness, reducing spending and the deficit. The swamps of Biden and Trump are vast! Must…try…to…stay away…

Meanwhile – all the wealthy people are inside today while the MAGA people are outside? Symbolic?

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP20 Jan 2025 9:13 a.m. PST

"Meanwhile – all the wealthy people are inside today while the MAGA people are outside? Symbolic?"

Again not true.

I watched them filing in from states all over (the fox commentator asked them as they went by). Many were there in line all night. When I last watched, people who had been there at 6am were going in. They were leaving purses, packs, sleeping bags in piles outside. Who knows if they will get them back. Then going through metal detectors. There were still long lines behind them.

Yesterday, they were there in droves for the festivities. The lines went for blocks.

This is not the first time it was moved inside. In Ronald Reagan‘s inauguration, they were going to let reenactors march in the parade. My group was one invited (at our own expense). I watched the weather and knew snow and cold were expected. I backed out, but many went. Got stuck in a barracks for the weekend and no parade, but they understood.

Weather is not as bad there as predicted now, but who knows. Also this may be all do to threats, (we've already had multiple attempts).

At least today, watch the Fox coverage. After 8 years of MSM hate and lies, do you really think they will cover with fairness? 🤣 For God's sake, MSNBC just put racheal madcow back on five days a week. 😂

Also:
I minor detail? 😂 it is a first. People never convicted or judicially accused of anything, given a blanket pardon. "They feared Trumps retribution!". Well these same individuals, did the same to Trump, his people and other citizens. I could say turn about would be fair play, but I won't.

In some instances, I believe these people are guilty of crimes against the American people, if they are not, are they saying they "don't trust the judicial system to give them a fair trial? A trial in an all RED city, with a jury made up of Trump voters, would not be fair? Say it ain't so! I mean these same people told us that trials in all BLUE cities, made up of Trump haters were fine for Trump, J6'ers, Trump election officials. Are they Being a little two faced? 😉

Are they afraid they might be locked up for months or even a year, without trial and sometimes solitary confinement might take place? OPPs.. missed the boat, it already happened to J6'ers.

I guess I can understand their paranoia. I'm sure the Nazi concentration camp guards, would have felt the same about Jewish prisoners handling their trials.

Fauci specifically irks me. I believe he is guilty of much.

Both sides have serious complaints. But I want to look ahead as I am sure you do. Again, apologies.

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP20 Jan 2025 10:04 a.m. PST

And now:

"My family has been subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me—the worst kind of partisan politics. Unfortunately, I have no reason to believe these attacks will end.

I believe in the rule of law, and I am optimistic that the strength of our legal institutions will ultimately prevail over politics. But baseless and politically motivated investigations wreak havoc on the lives, safety, and financial security of targeted individuals and their families. Even when individuals have done nothing wrong and will ultimately be exonerated, the mere fact of being investigated or prosecuted can irreparably damage their reputations and finances.

That is why I am exercising my power under the Constitution to pardon James B. Biden, Sara Jones Biden, Valerie Biden Owens, John T. Owens, and Francis W. Biden. The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that they engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense. "

Hmm 🤔 I'm sure President Trump, his family and friends, would have liked the same. 😉 But maybe he didn't believe he was guilty of anything worthy of pardons.

If Vito Corleone had, had such power. 😂

Well I think she first got upset when he said he was personally in favor of the "Nanny State". 😉

All I can say is, I hope it was spectacular, because he may lose two marriages to the same affair, which is no mean feat.

I don´t think there will be a next Civil War, so no need to prepare for it. Stargate/AI will change perceived reality. The BIG Tec companies have won. That is the victory Musk celebrated

Nine pound round22 Jan 2025 1:58 p.m. PST

It is going to be interesting to see how Trump reconciles his base to tech moguls. They aren't quite antithetical, but people are significantly more skeptical about Big Tech's agenda than they were a decade ago, significantly more aware of how it can be used to manipulate, and touchy about being talked down to (even as they rely on tech to mobilize and communicate).

The backlash against Ramaswamy and Musk during the H1B visa debate was a striking example of how the public can use tools to give highly unwelcome feedback in real time- it's the first case I think I've ever seen of actual grassroots participation in a real-time policy debate. Musk seemed better than Ramaswamy at figuring out what he was up against, and conceded without too much loss of face, but it's clear Trumpworld is done with Ramaswamy.

I did not expect that outcome- typically the donor class prevails- and it will be interesting to see whether we truly are in a new era, or whether they succumb to the temptation next time to use the algorithm to shut down the debate.

Nine Pound,

I don't think there is anything Trump could do that would cause his base to move away from him. I have never seen such 100% support for a politician in my lifetime. Trump once said he could shoot someone and his MAGA base would stay with him. I think he is correct.

Nine pound round23 Jan 2025 11:08 a.m. PST

I do. He could act like a conventional politician – and nothing is more like a conventional politician than backing away from a position because your donors or handlers don't like it.

Trump's strength with is base rests entirely on the belief that he won't do this. Ironically, one of the things that the media does that strengthens him most is to report, in outraged tones, whenever he declines to behave like a conventional politician. Nothing the media has said or done brought him more support than that.

I don´t think there will be a next Civil War,
The USA may have already been in a modern version of a Civil War, and it continues today. However, it was/is generally virtual and fought in the media. Save for the riots of 2020 and a number of other actions, e.g. Jan 6th, etc. …

IMO the sides were/are not North & South nor East & West but common sense and appreciation of reality vs. lack of common sense and a complete dismissal or understanding of reality …

I could be biased, or just plain wrong … but I don't think so …

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP25 Jan 2025 2:45 p.m. PST

Both sides think that way and will not budge…I think civil war would have happened if today's bitter feelings happened say, 150 years ago. I am not sure we have ever been one nation except maybe during WW2.

It is always the case that you thing you are right and "the other side" is wrong. What I used to admire was the acceptance of different opinion in the public discourse in the US. But that is lost. Nowaddays you are a Moron cause you see Trump as Jesus/Jordan/best thing since sliced bread or you are a traitor/marxist/can`t see reality cause you vote for anybody else/live outside the US/your country spend less than 5% for defense.
-POTUS says the US needs more territory.
-Greenland should be part of the US cause Denmark can´t defend it.
-POTUS said he would encourage Russia to ‘do whatever the hell they want' to any NATO country that doesn't pay enough.

I could go on and on. But I think it is time to admit defeat, reconsider the US as a hostile nation, and prepare for a divided world.

Disruption and tear down are not policies. We don't really know what will actually happen when the smoke clears. Hopefully, something positive for moving ahead. It looks like maybe Project 25 was a thing after all. Again, time will tell.
