I saw a story today as well that Ecuador is handing over some Russian made equipment to Ukraine finally. There is a Ukranian Antonov transport in Guayaquil.

I should note that Ukraine previously received Sea Kings from the U.K.

What will they use the Sea Kings for? Seems an odd choice to me.

Quoting the German defence minister…..

"The Sea King is a proven and robust helicopter that will help the Ukrainians in many areas, from reconnaissance over the Black Sea to transporting soldiers."

Well, I don't know when those Sea Kings came off the assembly line. But most are long in the tooth. However, it seems many are still flying in the US Military. As long as they are well maintained and upgraded as needed, they could be flying for many more years.

When we sacked ours (2016) there were quite a few older than me, that would be 45yo+. Still, they were doing ok as long as they weren't in Afghan. The heat out there was just killing the performance, new blades and engines was offset by all the new mods on the cabs which of course means more weight. So at least that's not an issue in Ukraine! (Meaning the heat, I hope the German ones have got roughly the same mods as ours).

As with our CH-47s in the 101 after Vietnam many of those old birds were upgraded. A number of times IIRC. And I got to the 101 in early 1980. They were still flying as were the old UH-1s. Until most of the UH-1s were replaced by UH-60s in about '81. But the CH-47s were still flying missions. And continue to …
