You were asked – TMP link

What type bases do you prefer when individually basing miniatures for skirmish games? (This poll assumes you play skirmish games and that you individually base your miniatures. Skirmish is defined however you want it to be defined.)

65% said "I prefer round bases"
16% said "I prefer square bases"
8% said "other (explain)"

I prefer the smallest base that will stably support the miniature, and I want it to fit in a 1" grid. 20mm square then 25mm round then 25mm square after that it has to take up 2 or more grid squares so 25x50mm rectangle or 40mm round or square up to 50mm round or square .
