The battles in this campaign are atypical (I read). By Plains wars standards they are big, Both sides attacked and defended as the situation demanded (or seemed to …). They are also complex with sub-actions taking place out of sight of each other. Pony Wars are not intended for historical battles, Yellow Ribbon would not be able to cope with the size and complexity. Any other suggestions?

I would suggest looking at the free 'The Men who would be Kings' variant on the Facebook group. It called the V4 Partizan MWWBK PLAINS WARS SUPPLEMENTARY RULES AND AMENDMENTS in the files section. I am a long time advocate of Yellow Ribbon. However, this variant is quite good and roughly achieves what YR does with a lot less work and understanding needed. We have played it several times now involving medium and large battles. They did a really good job on this! I know that he ran the LBH using them at a show in the UK.

I ran it using around 120+ Indians and 60 to 70 US Army figs. We played about 3 hours with guys who hadn't played before. I can also email it to you if you want.

Thanks

John

"Fields of Honor" might work. It is a 19th-Century set of rules. I use it for large set-piece battles of the 2nd Boer War.

Thanks John and OC,

I was planning to use TMWWBK but not looking forward to the amending of them. As I don't do Facebook I like to take up your offer of an email. My address is ajwellard1649@gmail.com.

Well, I thought you were looking for a large-scale set of rules. War Party/Regimental units. If it is a skirmish set of rules you want. I would consider a TSATF variant.

"Bugles, Boots n' Saddles" Indian Warfare on the Western Plains by Larry Brom.

All the amending has been done.

The Men who would be Kings variant is somewhat self contained. There is no real extra learning curve to use it. It really is just a breakdown of what these troop types do for a Plain's War battle. I'm sending it to you. I have been gaming the Plain's war since the 70's. Other than Yellow Ribbon, nothing has given me the feel of how Indians fight that fits with their real performance than this variant. I love Yellow Ribbon. But it's has a learning curve and isn't the easiest set to learn.

Thanks

John
