I've been working on Wellington and his staff. It turns out there was a lot more of them than I had imagined. They stand near the cross roads by the famous elm tree, with a square of the KGL behind. The staff consist of his senior officers, ADCs, extra ADCs, foreign observers and orderlies.

There's more on my blog at this link: generalpicton.blogspot.com

Hope you enjoy them!

You're right, way more than I had in my mind's eye. As a always, a very impressive staging of figures.

Wellington's Personal staff, their ADCs, the foreign representatives with their ADCs. Adkin lists the retinue or "cavalcade", to quote, as well over 48, not allowing for many an ADC etc (Page 97 of "The Bible")

All I can say is ……
Wow

CHRIS DODSON Supporting Member of TMP16 Jan 2024 1:56 a.m. PST

Very nice as always.

There seems to be a wealth of Wellingtons ( manufacturers ) on display!

Best wishes,

Chris

Ah yes, but while no French officer would have dared wear a grey greatcoat and a become 'a bataille', plenty of British officers wore a blue half cloak in the manner of Wellington.

CHRIS DODSON Supporting Member of TMP17 Jan 2024 11:49 a.m. PST

Yes they did.

You might have an umbrella or two as well.

The Waterloo Picton has a nice one and I made some up for his staff at Quatre Bras.

Best wishes,

Chris

Wasn't Ponsonby turned out in some sort of overcoat also (mind you, by 1800 hrs, he was presenting himself at the Pearly Gates)?

I know DoW banned junior officers of the Guards carrying brollies. Was that in the Peninsula though?

I will bet many a senior French occifer wore a blue cloak, with that short cape over the shoulders. There had been a shower or two after all………

Captain Siborne Supporting Member of TMP18 Jan 2024 1:04 p.m. PST

You can just see the Art Miniaturen Picton with his umbrella in the rear of the group. Picton was dead by this point so this is the Duke of Richmond.

CHRIS DODSON Supporting Member of TMP20 Jan 2024 6:15 a.m. PST

Spotted him, next to the Waterloo 1815 version.

All good stuff.

Best wishes,

Chris
