A good read, although being 20+ years old really shows. I doubt many would refer to those choosing not to live on a reservation as "wild Indians" if writing today.

Garryowen Supporting Member of TMP12 Jan 2024 5:51 a.m. PST

But they were wild. And why is wild considered a negative description? Reservation life was dull and boring.

Unfortunately you are right that no one would have the guts to use the term today.

They weren't wild, they are not animals. They had a culture and society and organized way of life. They wanted to continue that way of life and not live on a reservation.

In today's society, Should we now refer to them as being: reservation impaired? 😉

A great find, I have ridden the Battlefield on Horseback with a Crow/Guide, owner of the Horse's.
A great experience. Lots of Dead space on the field, and
with June thick/knee high grass -- a lot of cover for Indians on foot.
Yes, the Crow and the Apache perfer ( Indians ) to the
PC Bull#*% they consider Native Americans is, which could be
many people beside them.

"Wild" as in 'untamed,' perhaps ?

Ironic, really. That is to say, perhaps a contradiction in terms, since one might assume an American to be someone who followed in the footsteps of Amerigo Vespucci.

Nope, not going to say anything. I wrote an undergrad paper on the same subject, circa 74-75. I came to much different conclusions. I asserted that LTC Custer fought the battle using out moded Indian fighting tactics while ignoring the strategic plan of action.

Grattan54 – Excellent observations. ++

Bill NM & Grattan:

I understand your post-1968 concerns regarding Indian culture, but please remember the bigger picture. You're complaining about Nero's bad fiddling while Rome is ablaze.

Terminology changes with every generation. Custer's decision's were only made once.

Wild? They were livid.

Good find Tango, cheers!
