Happy New year to you all. I am after some help. I currently own a magnifier lamp on a stand and find it useful for looking at the finer detail on 15mm figures. It has a larger lens of 1.5x magnification and a tiny inset 4x lens.
As I get older I am using it more but wanted to get a larger lens of at least 4x. I chose one on amazon that was 8x but when it turned up it was clearly only about 2x. I tried again with one that was 5x with a 10x small lens..but yet again it's not as advertised. Does anyone have any ideas where to get something suitable in the UK before I pull the last of my hair out.

As another user of magnifiers I'd venture an opinion on using such a high magnification – it will rapidly produce eye strain. My close vision sight isn't great (1'm 73) and I have a 1.75x magnifier; I wouldn't want to push that beyond 2 or 2.5 max.

The loss of depth of focus and distortion if not looking directly through the lens would also be a problem at such high magnification using a simple lens.

Amazon sellers lie for a living but it can be difficult finding stuff without the platform.

Thankyou. I had worries about that. My intention is to use it only to look at the odd bit of detail work rather than use it for any continuous time. I find the little 4x lens useful but could do with something a little bigger. Maybe I should see if I can get just a magnifier.

I'm not in the UK But I have one built in China and it has LED lighting and can go up to 14X magnification.

I have used ready reader glasses. I tried the approach used by the clock repairer on "The Repair Shop", wearing two pairs of the 3.5 strength glasses. It works very well. They are only £2.00 GBP each fron the Pound Shop. You can also get clip on flip up lenses like these:

They are available in various strengths.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd prefer not to use wearable lens. Prefe something I can just put the pieces under.
