For awhile I've fancied doing a small Tudor project circa 1549. Since its fairly obscure I was probably going to do both the English army and a rebel force probably more based on Kett's Rebellion though I'm currently working my way through ET Fox's book on the Western Rebellion so I may flip
flop on that. First thought was something using Pendraken's 10mm ranges. A bit of fudge would be required but given the scale slight inaccuracies in dress etc would probably not be too noticeable and I don't think I can source everything I need. I'm avoiding 15mm since I have a huge quantity of the scale that's not seeing much action as it is. Then there is the 28mm option with the nice looking, period specific, and very shiny Assault Group miniatures range. Unfortunately even for say Lion Rampant-sized forces that's flirting with kidney selling territory for me at the moment for all metal forces. Warlord games plastics would cover some of foreign mercenaries involved but that seems to be about as far as plastics will help out? Anyone have any further thoughts or good ideas for approaching the period on a bit of a budget?

There are STL files (that I just bought) that are for the Henry VIII era. I bought them to do War of the Roses so they may be to early for what you want. Here's a link.

I have a lot of respect for Pendraken, but I'm afraid my best answer is more philosophical.

Often the economical way to cover a period is to be as broad as possible in your definition of "period" and focus on troop types rather than dress. Think of your war as a series of scenarios, and ask yourself whether your existing forces have any of them. Buying a period-specific unit or two if necessary and adding a few standard bearers is a LOT cheaper than raising new armies except in the smallest scales.

So in 28mm I have a single Tudor army. The bills and bows look a little more like Flodden, the pike & shot are more French Wars, and if the guns, demi-lancers, Irish kerns and border horse aren't quite dressed correctly for a particular battle, it's because I stayed within my limits of money and storage space. If you've got anything remotely applicable, I'd start from there.

@John
Thanks for the link. I think I saw it during an early search for figures but it didn't seem to pop up again.

@Robert
I've always been inclined to think that for the medieval into early modern period that much like today not everyone is going to be on point style-wise for a particular period and arms and armour perhaps more so. So your suggestion is probably a sensible and pragmatic approach in the face of the typical wargamer's desire for new and shiny.

Aside for the major final battle of Kett's rebellion was largely a series of relatively limited actions – even the significant fighting within Norwich is probably better broken down in to smaller discrete actions. So I'm inclining towards smaller more focused units of Royal troops and the supporting mercenaries – particularly those that appear to have done the bulk of the heavy lifting during the rebellion. The rebels may well be bulked out with some troops in more outdated dress and equipment!
