Before I purchase these rules, I would like to understand what kind of point system that is included to build balanced forces? Grateful for any comments on this!

There is a point system included in the rules, but frankly I don't bother with it. You'll get much more fun out of designing interesting scenarios rather than worrying about fielding "balanced" forces.

I agree scenario is the key. I'm my own case I developed a Fireforce mission using One Hour Skirmish rules. It pits 3 RLI fireteams (12 figures) against 8 ZANLA fireteams totaling 32 figures. The key house rules is to use custom card decks for each force. The RLI gets A-10 and ZANLA gets A-6. The tabletop results turn out much like they did in the historical actions. ZANLA gets wiped out and every RLI casualty has a major effect. I ran these rules with about 30 solo games at the start of COVID and had a great time doing it.
