I should have put an asterisk next to my mention of The Alamo (above), because I didn't note how it's terrible history even if it's a good "war movie". It gets in because it is based on the real Alamo and particpants, despite being heavily, heavily fictionalized. The 2004 Alamo movie sticks closer to history but has its share of bloopers, too. Mostly in the characterizations of the historical figures. Not a great war movie -- excellent battle sequence, tho!

Also, I should have included -- I knew I'd forget something -- "Pork Chop Hill" and "The Longest Day" and "A Bridge Too Far."

Add "The Alamo" (2004) to my previous list. Great movie and more accurate than any other Alamo movie.

Some excellent films listed here. I couldn't say what is the best war movie and I'm not even sure I could even say a good movie. I can name some war movies that I like, watch quite often and haven't seen listed above though I may have missed them.
The Sea Shall Not Have Them (1954)
The Small Back Room (1949) (Hour of Glory in US)
Home of the Brave (1949) – US patrol on Pacific island; effectively claustrophobic jungle combat.
The Long and the Short and the Tall (1961). British patrol in Burma during Japanese invasion.
Sea of Sand (1958)
Yangste Incident (1957)
Men In War (1957)
