I've tried Battlegroup a few times, it works but there are a couple of things that are getting in my way. Maybe TMP can help!

1) Ammo: how critical is it to track ammo? I've gone both ways and it didn't seem to make a difference, but that's only about 5 games. I don't like tracking it, but is it really important to the game?

2) I don't like the data tables at the back and the army lists seem clunky to me. Is there a free army builder out there that will automate that and then include the armor and gun values on the army list so I don't have to look them up in the book? I tried a couple but they had issues.

Thanks!

NLM, we don't track ammo. Like you we used to, but it didn't add to the game.

I don't know of an army builder app. We just base the units we have on book strength and use Xcel to add up the BR and points. Example below. It takes an hour or so to set it up, but once it's done it's easy to add/subtract points and BR for a game. The card sets come in useful, too. Much easier to use them than to have to refer to the book for the unit stat's.

Points BR Sub-unit Rating Vehicle QTY Weapon
230 12 Tank Troop Reg Cromwell Mk.V 3 75 mm L
Challenger 1 17lb ATG

I run Battlegroup games at conventions so I've had to make up my own datacards to help my players. I have these blank ones that you can use. They aren't fancy, but you can put all the info that you need for a unit in one place. Here is the link: link

As for ammo, the only time I would track it is if the scenario really depended on it. If it is a smaller game and there are only a couple vehicles per side, or it is a bigger gun with just a couple of shots.

When we first started plain BG we ignored the Ammo rule.

BUT as we learned more of the mechanics of the rules we now understand that the Ammo supply is very important! Especially when playing tank destroyers… you just can't send them out to shoot at anything and keep firing!

So to answer you question the Ammo supply limit is important!
