It was since long time my dream to be able to make a Roman Trireme (Punic wars, mostly the second, to avoid to build the corvus)with paper and to use with my papersoldiers (30mm tall)in a 1:1 scale (as usual).
I took the very beautifull template of wargame vaults

and I transformed it: making a better proportion (longer and narrower) and some more addings. Still a lot to do and a lot of mistakes to be amended but the idea is already visible

WOW! I thought you meant paper flats (2 dimensional picture as seen from above). This is much more impressive!

Nice ship! That model took hours to make… Fantastic job! Thanks for sharing, and for inspiring the rest of us.

Have you thought of using thicker cardboard? I make 3D castle models printing on full-sheet label paper. I cut and apply this to 2mm – 3mm thick cardboard, from a local framing shop (Michael's). It is more complicated to build, but the models are far more durable, and they have enough weight not to be blown over by someone passing by them. I used the same technique for siege towers. You can see the thickness of the walls, as well as the edges being painted gray, in this photo. I originally made this tower out of 110# cardstock. It was flimsy, and it did not do well, over time.

Here are some Battering Rams. The one on the left is made with 3mm thick cardboard; the one on the right, is made from 110# cardstock. The bigger model has a ram made from a wooden dowel, wrapped with label paper for the shaft (no painting required!), and the head is made from cardboard, with the edges blackened with a marker (undercarriage not assembled yet).

I would also recommend using either a black, brown, or gray marker, along the cut edges. This will make the white edges disappear, nicely. Cheers!

@Stryderg thanks. Actually there are some flats: the Roman Legionaries that had to be used to recreate a 1:1 ratio legion (still a lot to be done). I will try to improve my trireme in any way.

@Sgt Slag. Thanks for your comment. I am glad I could be of help for inspiring new adventures with paper. Concerning your queries: I used parer 240gr/m2 thick (it is almost like cardboard) and for the deck I used cardboard 3 mm thick to make the structure stronger. Then I reinforced all with toothsticks. The weight of my trireme is quite heavy (considering that it is in paper) because I added a part in metal where the mast is attached through a magnet in order to remove it as fast as the Romans where doing before battles. (I will add some pictures later on).

I do like your paper workd and they do inspire me as well. I pay my congrats.

I will use watercolour to finish the trireme, making in gold and copper some parts and filling up the parts in white white brown or black. Still work to be done… I hope next trireme will look better….
