I've used the Valour & Fortitude rules twice, some months ago.

I often run simulations prior to games to try out tactics, re-fresh a rule set, or in this case, make sure I actually know & can use the rules.

So far, the rules seem relatively simple & uncontroversial…..we'll see.
You may notice I'm using 3 gun batteries instead of the recommended 1 gun model battery. Two reasons for this – 1 model doesn't give an artillery battery any presence or, I think, the necessary footprint. And, my collection has always used 3-4 models for a battery & I don't want to have 75% of my guns as superfluous. The only issue I can think of is the bigger batteries might clog up the battlefield but if so, I think we could allow the Rules' brigade interpenetration rules to apply to stray artillery batteries.

I'm very much looking forward to the game on the 13th.

Love your troops! My first outing with the rules crashed and burned. We couldn't figure out open order and skirmish. I thought it had to be a formation. There were a few other questions we had. I plan on running them again. I think the rules update with some youtube support has improved my understanding. Plus the involvement of the author on the Facebook group. He is great about answering questions. I just picked upabout 60+ painted Hinton Hunt painted British infantry. That'll pump up my British forces. Russians are on deck. I already have Prussians and French poainted. All in 1/72 scale or close enough to it. I have been printing up 13.5mm Epic infantry and Cavalry strips scaled to 1/72 scale. Artillery have also been printed. I like what I have watched and read of the rules. I plan on running it in the next few months past March. Cincycon is the beginning of March so I need to have my games ready for it.

Thanks

John

John, IMO there may well be better rule sets but they take 2-3 longer to play.

I haven't yet convinced everyone in our little group that V&F should be our "go-to" set but that's my avowed plan.

I'm jealous of your HH acquisition.

I agree with your view on artillery batteries. I use 1 gun = 2 guns and looks more realistic to my eye along with the large footprint on the battlefield.

Also, I like casualty removal, which reflects the tactical dilemma of defending shrinking lines by steadily diminishing battalions. Strangely, V&F does not allow casualty removal for formed units but it OK for skirmishing units.

I admire V&F's aim of speeding up the game but I think it rids itself of necessary tactical granularity IMHO.

They are fast play, quick to learn (due to page length), provide some flavor with the traits and can handle quite a bit of troops on the table. Granularity may not be as present as other games. But I'll give some of that up if it 'feels right' is fast play and I can run big games. It meets all those criteria. An added bonus is they are also covering other periods with the rules. That is a pretty big plus as well!

Thanks

John

I've noticed the extension program & yes, that does add to the value.

One of our group isn't too keen on V&F for the "granularity" issue. It *is* kind of cool to have musketry rules that allow a bonus for First Volley, differentiate between short & long range, take weather into account etc. But not if it means you run a game for hours and still don't have the time to finish.

I'm not about to throw my 'General d'Armee' rulebook away but it's starting to look unnecessary.
