I carried my kindergarten bible, wrapped in plastic, in my left breast pocket the whole year that I was in Viet Nam. It worked!

I carried a copy of the New Testament Psalms/Proverbs in my right shoulder blouse pocket for years. It still looks like new.

When I deployed, my daughter wore a copy of my dog tags the entire time I was deployed.

Being a round-bottomed 4F Civilian For Life, I never had the opportunity to consider what I might carry as a talisman when facing an enemy.

But I did encounter one some 40 years ago when I dabbled in antiques. In the estate of a 1917 Doughboy was a small, jointed Teddy Bear. Not a Steiff or other recognizable (to me) brand, it was clearly from the "Golden Age" of Teddy Bears when the original "Teddy" was still alive.

About two inches tall, with a light brown fur, it had been carried in the pocket of his uniform trousers, easily in reach. The fur was fully intact and overall in excellent condition, it's only imperfection was the strip on the back of its head and down the spine.

Clearly, it had been rubbed and rubbed for good luck any number of times. And it had brought him back from France to a long life.

Wish to Blazes I had kept it….

Not a "good luck chaem" but my Dad (USMC WWII) carried a rosary around his neck. I have that rosary now. It is unusual that it is a continuous loop with the crucifix attached to the loop instead of dangling.

I carried the Book of Common Prayer, given to me me by my brother. I still have it on my bedside table.

No, I did not carry anything for luck. But I once carried a Flat Stanley for a cousin's kid's school project. He was tucked into my armor. As we rolled out through the ECP on to Mobile out of Nasser Wa Salaam we took some sniper fire. So Flat Stanley would have qualified for a Combat Action Badge. Iraq 2007.

I had a chain with a silver cross hanging around my neck… during heavy bombings I held it tightly while I prayed… many times it made my hand bleed… I keep it in a little chest along with other reminders of the war …

I kept a bible in my breast pocket. Prior to leaving for the forward division supply area we drew cards to see who'd die first. I drew the death card. I kept it in the exterior cammo band of my helmet for all to see as an act od defiance. My friend was the only guy in our group killed….he refused to draw a card.

Now I keep a Saint Christopher medal a friend of my son's gave me to keep me safe when he was in elementary school. I keep it in a pocket of my body armor.
