One thing to remember is that the most common unit assigned to escort a wagon train were infantry and not cavalry. Sometime red legs, foot artillery men without cannon were assigned to escort duty. Cannon were often left at a stockade. Foot troops were used as they could March at the wagon rate of movement without the horse which required large amount of feed.
