I'm currently on something of a Doyle kick , along with old "fantastic" literature in general. Lot No. 249 (1892) appeared at a time when there was a great interest in Egyptology. Disinterred mummies were popular exhibits in museums and the site of these grisly remains are a possible inspiration for this short tale. It has been filmed a few times including in 2023 but I have not seen any of these. Doyle introduces several tropes that would appear in Universal and Hammer films.

The story also influenced Lovecraft and Howard.
