I gather this is Ged's own handiwork as a paint job. I did do his Gendarme d'Elite drummer some years ago and always meant to tackle this chap, but like all good intentions.

Ged asked me if they were part of the Guard. My understanding was that they largely brigaded as such but strictly did not enjoy that status

Correct, the two regiments of Carabiniers were generally brigaded and were not of the Guard; by some accounts, they considered themselves ABOVE those Revolutionary/Imperial upstarts.

Very nice work. Poor horse, though, those drums banging in its ears…

You want kettle dummers? Bet you wonder how they control the horse. It turns out the drummer has reins running from his legs to the horse's bit.

Here is a Pole and a pair of Gendarmes (these slightly converted from the original, the red is the earlier uniform), both types from Gringos that I painted many a moon ago;

I meant stirrups, but must now check the Household Cavalry to see if they do the same. Those nasty Nazi SS drummers surely did.
