I think there is an over reliance on magnum rounds. A .38 semi-wadcutter or wadcutter is still a good self defense round. Assuming LRN are out of the equation, accuracy and shot placement trump bullet shape.

Load the wadcutter in backwards. That's what our civilian security team used in a .38 Chief Special.

Question: What is the difference between an offensive and defensive round for a 38/357?

Generally, by their nature, pistols are defensive weapons. If you are using it for personal self defense against people you need to look at over penetration and your backstop. If you are using a pistol for hunting, you want penetration, and backstops are generally not an issue.
