Welcome back David – hope you are back to 100% now!

Doesn't Poland raise this every couple of years , like Bolivia and the Chilean coast…

donlowry16 Dec 2023 9:29 a.m. PST

Have the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, France, Denmark, Norway, Czech, Slovakia, the former parts of Yugoslavia, Greece, the Baltic states, Belorus, Ukraine and/or Russia asked for reparations? (I may have forgotten a few.)

JP2 (a Pole ironically) declared a Year of Jubilee during his pontificate. That means all debts are forgiven. Mosaic law called for that same thing every 50 years.

Maybe it's time we set aside the hurts committed and suffered by the long dead and deal with our own current problems.

Andrew Walters16 Dec 2023 10:05 a.m. PST

And Venezuela wants 2/32s of Guyana.

How long until Italy demands all of the Roman Empire back?

Macedonia should get Iran back.

Argentina should pay for the destruction from the Falklands war.

Let's get this all cleaned up!

I should think the years under the Soviet Unioon held them back just as well

They should sue Putin too

If we go down this road, Mexico may want Texas and California back – or maybe just Texas

Col Piron16 Dec 2023 1:12 p.m. PST

Wonder if Russia could ask for Alaska back ?

Story from 2022

Good to see you posting, David. I hope you're feeling a lot better.

Poland's foreign minister on Monday signed an official note to Germany requesting the payment of about $1.30 USD USD trillion in reparations for the damage incurred by occupying Nazi Germans during World War II.

This wouldn't be greedy politicians and lawyers looking for any excuse to make scads of money, would it?

I suspect, at the very heart, it's pre-election, chest-thumping, flag-waving nationalism. For its weighty and numerous downsides, nationalism gets people to the polls.

Argentina should pay Britain reparations for the costs of the Falklands War. And the 'Hand of God' goal too.

Let's not get started on what China wants.

China won't ask. China will take.

…or buy.

Good point, Andrew. So still about people getting money- in this case well-paid politician slots?

Gozerius16 Dec 2023 4:57 p.m. PST

Attn: COL PIRON,
We paid cash money for that.

Disco Joe16 Dec 2023 8:18 p.m. PST

I think they should make it an even $2 USD trillion.

Let's see, WWII ended somewhere around 1945, subtract that from 2023, carry the one, uhh, carry another one, and yeah, I think they are a little late. Probably should have asked around 1950 or so.

Cerdic17 Dec 2023 7:00 a.m. PST

Gozerius – did you keep the receipt?

Gozerius17 Dec 2023 7:28 a.m. PST

Filed in the Library of Congress.😉

Cerdic in case you are thinking Gozerius is kidding, he isnt:

It is actually in the National Archives not the Library of Congress but that is being picky.

donlowry17 Dec 2023 9:23 a.m. PST

We paid for Alaska, and California too!

Col Piron17 Dec 2023 10:33 a.m. PST

@Gozerius

Nothing stopping them asking to buy it back for the same cost . evil grin

What about if the indigenous peoples ask for their land back ?

Swampking17 Dec 2023 11:51 a.m. PST

Nationalism might get people to the polls but considering the opposition won in the recent national election; this story is irrelevant. The current government is under a Eurocrat (Tusk). And he is supposed to be a 'shill' for the EU(SSR) and the Germans, hence PiS's claims against Germany are a dead letter.

The Germans were to pay war reparations after WWI. How did that work out?

4th Cuirassier18 Dec 2023 6:51 a.m. PST

@ donlowry

That argument is not popular when it comes up in connection with the Elgin Marbles.

dapeters19 Dec 2023 3:01 p.m. PST

Yes I think those Poles should ask Russian for Money.

Cuprum223 Dec 2023 6:36 a.m. PST

Mmm… They can ask, but then Russia can ask for everything that it invested in the restoration and development of Poland in the post-war period. This is a lot.

Cuprum2, I love your sense of humor!

In 1953 Poland – their government – waived all further reparations.

As this is the base for Germanys acknowledgement of the borders (a full third of Poland is on former German territory, some 100.000kmē) this can of worms stays better closed.

Its 75 years ago now, with the question being closed 70 years ago. How many old grudges and open bills do you want to settle?
