My latest installment in tackling painting my Perry plastic ACW troops with contrast paints (soon to be speed paints as well).

Luckily I don't own all the available blue contrast paints or I would still be trying to work out the best combination. As usual it is a short video so as not to bore the restless.

Not sure if this is just experimenting with contrast paints or the first steps towards painting a substantial number of Federal troops. If the latter, (a) is there a darker, more indigo-toned contrast paint you could use for the coats and forage caps? – it might be the camera flash but that shade of blue is rather bright and light; and (b) Federal haversacks were mostly black (waterproofed).

@eumelus

Thanks for your input, I have used Leviodon blue which is an Indigo tone which I think looks about right but this camera and lighting is simply terrible. The chap on the left is painted with that blue but looks like he has been painted with the Ultramarine like the chap on the right.

Thanks for the info regarding the haversacks, I'm painting the rest of my horde as CSA did they use waterproofing? I understood they were a plain linen or canvas.

Confederate issue haversacks were generally plain linen or canvas, as you state. For that reason, captured Federal haversacks were a prized possession of many a Southern soldier – I usually give about 10-20% of my Rebs black haversacks.

I thought that the flash might be distorting the colors. Good looking troops, BTW.

Had another go at photographing them, always good to have someone critique your work helps a lot.
Thankyou

Oh yes, much better pics and the blue looks much better. I do love the Perry plastics.

Looks soo much better with follow up photos. As you will learn ad nauseam just about any combination of blues an grey will suffice. This being down to the different materials, manufacturers both at home and abroad, weather/wear, and captured equipment. And of course any other reasonable explanation. Enjoy the ride.
