Disclaimer: I found this on YouTube, in a car model-making video. I did not discover this on my own…

The secret ingredient of the infamous, Magic Wash formula, was Future/Pledge Floor Shine, until they stopped making it, a few years ago (2021?).

I learned of a replacement for it: Quick Shine Floor Polish, available at Wal-Mart stores, and online.

Cost? $6.87 USD, for a 27 ounce bottle, or 25.4 ¢/fluid ounce, in US money.

Is it the same product? Will it work the same? Can I add any acrylic polymer paint to it, to make custom colored washes for my miniatures?

Take a look at the ingredient list, from Wal-Mart's site:

Filtered Water, Zinc Free Polymer, Polymer Emulsion, Plasticizer, Mild Solvent, Leveling Surfactant, Biodegradable Preservative, Antifoam.

The Polymer indicates it is acrylic, like paint; the Surfactant is the chemical which breaks surface tension, allowing it to flow int nooks, crannies, and recesses, drawing the diluted paint particulates into the folds of the models. This is precisely what Future/Pledge Floor Shine did. It is the same basic formula, it performs the same way.

Hallelujah, Baby! I am a dyed-in-the-wool Dip'er, and I love the Magic Wash as my go-to when I need a non-brown/black. custom colored wash, like blue, or white, on an otherwise all black painted figure.

My last bottle of Pledge Floor Shine is 10+ years old, and it is slowly drying out, thickening, inside the bottle. Not sure I can add water to it, to revive it. Now I don't have to experiment, I have found a replacement product -- inexpensive, and essentially the same thing! Cheers!

I build models (tanks & military equipment), & I use this stuff as my official Future replacement. It works well, not as good as Future was, but OTOH it is good enough for my purposes.

Damon.

Thanks Sgt Slag. I've been fretting about this for a while. I rely heavily on Future/Klear, and my stock is running very low. I wonder if it's available in the UK.

Hello, could you please also provide the original composition of Future? I'd like to try something similiar in Spain. TIA

PS. is this new quick shine floor finish transparent or opaque?

I do not know the chemical content of the original Future Floor Shine, which later became Pledge Floor Polish. I believe an artist supply shop's Acrylic Medium is acrylic paint without any pigment, if that helps you. Future/Pledge is somewhat similar, but it has flow aid added to it, which breaks surface tension. This may be something as simple as adding a drop of dish/wash-up liquid soap to the Acrylic Medium.

The new product, Quick Shine Floor Polish, is a watery, milky white color. Allegedly they colored it to prevent children from thinking it is water, and drinking it. It is not opaquely white as milk, for the same reason.

It might be a good idea to do some label reading, at your local stores, which carry floor shine products, to see if you can find something similar, if you cannot locate this brand of product. Cheers!

But will it yellow over time?

Ingredients in Future floor wax reading whats on the label:
Water, Proprietary Film Formers, Tributoxyethyl phosphate, ethoxydiglycol, fragrance ammonium hydroxide oleic acid methylsothiazinone proprietary fluorosurfactant benzotriazol dodecyl p-cresol hydrogen peroxide pentasodium pentetate.
I hope that helps Javier!
I have used the new stuff Sgt. Slag mentions it works… Not quite the same as Future but will have to do..

LOL My wife used half a bottle of my carefully conserved original Pledge on the floors before I noticed, she only use half a bottle as she said "it worked so well I didn't need to do the floors as often"

I pointed out it was well out of production and what the hell was she doing in my paint sanctum anyways!
