Like many of you, I am incurably curious about hypotheticals, and particularly about the planning and preparation for wars that never happened. Between 1875 and 1913, the European general staffs planned for numerous contingencies that never happened. I am thinking (for example) of the numbered French plans (I thru XVI), the various German and other plans for war in the East or west, and hasty contingency planning such as the concepts that were put together during the 1877-78 Eastern Crisis or the Fashoda Crisis as the great powers tried to plan for different combinations of powers in conflict by land and by sea.

A few books capture portions of this topic, and I have in mind Theodore Ropp's book on the French navy, or Terence Zuber's book on the German Army. Do any of you have favorite references that provide both background and detail on war plans for this era that were never executed?

Never Wars: The US Plans to Invade the World is a decent book about various American war plans.

Thanks- I have the five volumes of "American War Plans, 1919-1941," which contains a lot of the plans this references (although not the pre-WWI plans).

While this book is about a war plan that actually was executed, it is a quick read and has some interesting discussion on the planning that went into it:

I'm sure there are books in other languages that address these war plans but I haven't looked at those. Definitely an interesting topic.

Not a book but this boardgame addresses War Plan Crimson. I picked it up, was always interested in that particular plan to invade Canada: link

Thanks for the recommendation on "War Planning 1914."

Now I just need to get my hands on a copy of Marchand's "Plans de concentration de 1871 a 1914."
