Can someone please tell me when flags went from TYW/Wof3K one handed style short staff to 2 handed long staff? |

I don't think it's certain, but in my Helion "Armies and wars of the Sun King Vol 2 it says the longer poles came in "gradually, seemingly from the end of the c.17th". However an illustration from the same book shows a longer pole with a suggested date of 1660s to 1670s. Confusing… |

I think the longer flagstaff was always used. Certainly medieval images show them more often than shorter ones. During the Renaissance the shorter staff seems to come into favour with mercenary foot (possibly copied from those habitually used by Italians from much earlier – particularly city militia units) but the longer pole doesn't go away. As armies became larger it seems that they also tended to become more uniform and by the end of the 17th C the long seems to have supplanted the short in most European armies. |
