You were asked – TMP link

Do you find that the hobby attracts obsessive personalities? (Poets tend to have obsessive personalities, supposedly.)

57% said "yes, it attracts obsessive personalities"
17% said "no, it does not attract obsessive personalities"

How did we get from "attracts obsessive personalities" to "Stop obsessing!"?

You write as though having an obsessive personality was obviously, always and objectively a bad thing. What sort of personality do you want conducting a pre-flight on an aircraft you'll be flying in? How about performing maintenance or a safety check on your car?

For myself, I want the host of a wargame to be the sort of person who inventoried the castings the previous week, double-checked that the terrain was in good order, ran off enough copies of the QRS and probably ran the scenario multiple times. There's a word for that sort of person.

I'm obsessive about wargaming but not about anything else really. I would imagine a lot of people are like that with whatever hobby they enjoy

Historical miniature players are the most obsessive. This includes myself. I guess BrockLanders you are correct that most dedicated hobbyist are obsessive about their hobby.

Obsession is generally considered to be a negative word. Clinically, it indicated behaviour that is unhealthy because it adversely affects other parts of one's life. Pretty much every definition gives it a negative cast.

Unfortunately, the word in modern usage has come to mean "you value doing something that I do not, so obviously there is something wrong with you".

Isaac Asimov used to write the editorials that open the SF short story magazine with his name. In one, he pointed out that many people called him a "workaholic" (a term popular at the time). His counter was that they would have no problem if he earned a living as an accountant and spent the same amount of time writing as a hobby.

Playing a wargame really only requires one detail oriented person to set it up, referee it, and (hopefully only rarely) interpret the rules.
